  • Four door grocerie getter.....her name is allison XD

I got my car 100% stock type-m freshly brought in by "Exotic car and Auto". Originally i was looking for an S chassis, But slowly i started dippin into the skylines, particularly the rb's. So gradually i shifted my search from s13 to r32, after about three or four months of research, i came across the one i own now, at Exotic car and auto in NE calgary. When i first went to see it i didnt even know it was gonna be a four door :/. Im soo glad it was! i loved the idea of a sedan skyline. I wasnt too sure about the tails of the 4door compared to the coupe. Eventually the rear end grew on me, and i now prefer it over most 2 door skylines i see.

here she is, 4 years ago when i first got her.

all minty fresh as was jesse's car and franklin's haha.

I fell in love with drifting and the idea of total car control while i began searching for a RWD car to buy. Stumbled across D1GP and things like that.. its all history from there. Before i bought my R32 i was sharing a chevrolet malibu with my sister. Lets just say, i quickly learned how to use the ebrake, counter steer and weight transfer =). I knew i needed RWD, I quickly discoverd boosted vs. Na motors while researching platforms, Instantly fell in love with boost before i had even owned a turbo car.

It even had the stock airbox when i bought it! drove it like this, completly stock with a ctire cone on there for the winter and into may,

After about a month of driving the car on dry pavement again, i bought a few parts off my neighbor for a boosted car he had lying around; Turbosmart BOV, Ebay front mount, Some IC piping ( was garbage, never used it) and i also picked up a Willans four point harness from JDM tuners..

    .
I actually never ended up using that FMIC core or the piping, I bought a greddy profec spec b (ran about 12.5 pounds)greddy Mspec kit for my rb20 and a SSQV from autodream, A strut bar from franklin and a cone filter from Ctire, later that same summer and drove it like this:

I then started wanting to push my limits more and wanted to go to the track, I was excstatic to find out about Dsport. I started craving performance driving, turned into a fiend. Got some decals cause i thought it was super cool drifter look, and started to see what i could do with the car.

Eventually tho my ambition led me to a summer fun ending failure. It was a late night and a goup of my buddies were all going out to a drift spot, East of calgary. I lied to my parents to go with them, being 16 or 17 at the time i was supposed to be home by 12:30...
so we get to the spot and im getting some lessons on ebrake drifting and trying it out, learning to initiate faster and ebrake slide. Im doing great, for 25 minutes or so. Then just started to get a little careless, I initiated way to fast into a 90 degree angle curb lined corner, which happend to have some gravel patches scatered on it too! I went parralel into the curb going about 70-80km/h and basically hover crafted the car, got 5 feet of air and landed the car in some mud, ****. Devestating. I completly demolished the whole suspension system on the right side of the car front and back, probably had about +50 degree of camber on the right side. wish i had pictures..
    annywho.
My initiation into mechanics had begun, I had the car towed back to my house, got mega **** from my parents, but knew what i had to do. I started replacing all the suspension components with a help from my friends and the internet, picked up used HKS hyper Max 2's which were blown, but still greatly improved my handling and stance, for 400bux.

I got the car put back together after two months and some debt. I was back out on the track and on the street.

Ohh yeah forgot to mention, discoverd how much of a neccesity raiding tire pits was :]

    .

The summer ended with the car running very well, and i was very happy with it.
    .

I put stock coilovers back on it for the winter, and had lots of fun with it During the winter. I bought a new battery, battery blanket and electric oilpan heater, to improve reliability in winter.
After the winter, i bought a RPS Max street clutch, Straight pipe exhaust a Stri boost and volt gauge. Love it.

Now, this was three summers ago, that dsport had its first road course drift practice, It was in july, awesome day Loadds of Fun!
Buuut, pushing my RB20 to do 3rd gear drifts wasnt the easiest thing for the motor to take, I ended up throwing a rod through the side of my block, and that was the end of that.

I was faced with what to do, ie: sell the car, swap in another 20, maybe think about a 25 swap....

    pulled the 20..

Sourced out a 25 that had a greddy intake mani and a hks gt2535BB turbo on it, and cleaned it all up/painted.Dropped er in,

Got the motor in and running in about late august, with a shitty stock ecu that wasnt working properly. By this time i was supposed to be going out to kelowna for school and bringing my car with me.The car wasnt running well enough for me to take it on a long journey through the mountains, So i left it in calgary whhen i had to leave for school in sept, Meanwhile i sourced out a power fc and some Stance Gr+ Pro coilovers.

Thanks to my a few friends, they put the coilovers on my car while i was in ktown and installed the power FC, car was running great, with the wastegate actuator set to 10 psi. So i flew back from ktown and picked up my car, Drove it out to kelowna no problems. This was about october when i finnaly got to bring it to ktown. I had it there for no more than three weeks before it popped again.

I was driving from kelowna to west bank at night, a Sl55 amg starts playing with me, its all blacked out i know he wants to race. I decide to race him from a roll, started at 50- he pulled ahead half a car right off the start, by about 160 i was creeping on him, approaching 200 and i pass him. see him in my rear view, then all off a sudden... maaaad vibrations coming from the motor and smoke. **** My Life.
When i finnaly got to take it apart to see what happened, i could see that cylinder 5 leaned out hard and i put a toonie sized hole in the side of my piston.

So now my car is back in calgary broken, im back in kelowna planning my build.

    -Wiesco pistons
    -Eagle rods
    -fully machine the motor
    -acl race bearings
    -ARP hardware
    -740 cc injectors
-Apexi power fc boost control kit
    -new coilpacks
    -lightweight flywheel
    etc..

Took a few months putting it all together(its may now), start er up, runs good, but faintly,, knock knock knock knock. ****.
Went through all my part number etc, found out that i was incorrectly given RB26 mains, so i get a Set of rb25 bearings ordered. Take the motor out of the car, and strip the bottom end. When the new bearings came i installed them, sealed everything back up, started the car, seemed to run fine, knock sensor was reading some low numbers but i was told thats normal. So now it ready to be broken in,

..Dont mind the lip, i took it off.

this is two summers ago now, Im approaching my deadline to have to go to kelowna again.. motor still needs more kms on it and a tune before i can bring it to ktown...so im forced to leave it behind and fly back to get it tuned once its fully broken in. Its october again, i fly back because i have a tunning date with RCTS. My dyno session with them got cut short when i sprung a power steering / coolant leak on the dyno.

I still wanted to get my car tunned and bring it out to ktown with me, so i talk to autodream and after i fixed the leaks, ngyuen
decideds he'll tune it. The motor put down great numbers, for such a small turbo it put down 330WHP and 300+ ft/lbs. on 15psi (tried higher boost but didnt see any power gains) i was stokked for all of one day, before It popped the bed and the bearings fused to the crank the next day.
Heres some pics of the turbo, just so you can see how small that is,

Sooooo, I now park the car indefinetly and had some serious thinking to do. It is now 2010,I decide i should put the skyline on the back burner for a little bit and get a different car, which would be in good driving condition. Soo i take a chance and decide i want to import a JZX90 cresta. long story short i payed for it, waited and waited, and when it finnaly came it was a different car than the one in the pictures of what i purchased. (lol car wasnt even 5speed) anyyways... wasnt what i wanted so i got my money back.

I then got a wave of motivation to buy a scrap 25 and Build it, and swap over all my usable parts from the motor build i had just done. So thats what i did.

      this came in the mail,

I bought a block/head with rotating assembly, and got it all machined up, using stock pistons and rods this time. Got it all put together in july of 2010, and had it looking like this,

        Dropped it in the car

Build list for this motor includes:
        -Kelford 270 race/street cams
        -adjustable cam gears

Looked and ran good. I had a lot of kinks to work out but that comes with garage building cars. I was workin my way through the list of things, random electrical problems etc.. breaking the motor in.. Put 350km on it and this happend:

Yay ! ****. The bolt failed, the tensioner fell off, while i was driving thank god i was decelerating when it happend. this happend 3 days before i had to leave for kelowna in sept, Soo my car is parked, possibly with bent valves.. Hopefully not.

I need to save up a bit before i jump into this again, ive but well over 15k maybe more like 20 by now, But my plan is big top mount turbo, and if the motor is still strong well be all good 500+hp.

Its been a long journey, the car is priceless to me now, probably going to keep it for a very very long time. Never got a chance to do any body, or even rims. Ive jsut been solely focused on mechanics.. One day shell look good, and run mint!

I also took the time to Clean and repaint the brakes, Black

        cleaned the coilovers..

        Deleted Hicas,

Made a Dual fuel pump set up,

        painted oil pan lol

car is now sitting like this

        about 95% complete..

I plan on attempting to make these fit, with proper hub adapter and spacers/fender rolling/cutting ha

Mmmm sigh so i had to buy a DD, tiffany:

and she treats me very well, 5speed VQ !

Jesus christ, that is a heartbreaking build to read.. But never the less, very inspiring. I feel your pain with small faults and failures but i'm glad to see you've regained interest at all intersections.

Great read, and i'm really looking forward to seeing the outcome of all this!!

Can we go over some of the specific reasons for why the motor seized/ tensioner bolt snapped/ lean condition?

I'm assuming the lean condition was simply a tuning issue, but the motor seizure and tensioner bolt are real strange?

          Thanks for sharing!

              Thanks guys!

Well... As for the leaning issue, it's kinda a mystery. Maybe an injector failed? :S I dunno for sure. I was using the power fc rb25 base map, didn't have a wideband at the time.

The motor failures were due to a not so reputable machine shop, thinking that because rb26eagle rods were used, that I should have rb26 bearings,:/. And because I put it together they said it was all my fault yet I payed them to do all the clearances etc so that when they give it back to me it would be ready to be assembled...they lied. Then the second time, after much debate with these boneheads, they ordered me rb25 bearings and repolished the crank. Supposedly they were clearance properly, but the day of the tune, ie first time going WOT, kabloom! Smoke, vibrations, clank clank clank ****.

So then the following summer I went to a different machine shop, whom I love, and got them to do the machine work on a second rb25 for me, they determined I needed (hx) series bearings instead of standard rb25 ones, this is where the last shop went wrong.

As for the tensioner bolt snapping... Could have been my mistake but, I swear I used the torque spec out of the fsm, and upon inspection of the bolt, there were no signs of sheering or wrecking threads due to over tightening. All I know is the problem faced infront of me and that I've got a job to do, which is fixing it, and making sure the motor runs healthy when I'm done. So j can finnaly enjoy her.

When i was reassembling my motor, i noticed that a lot of people were having issues with shops picking the correct size mains and rod end journal bearings.. The tolerances are SO minute, and even a std 1+ or 2+ bearing shows very minute difference. It's all in who handles the micrometer and who has the experience unfortunately.. Terrible lesson to learn, especially when it's not your fault!

See, this worries me.. I'll be replacing my tensioner bolt soon once my proper head studs come in.. I'm just hoping this doesnt happen to me. Is there hinting of stretched threads? Is this bolt even reusable? Little information is given, and from what i can tell, there's a replacement bolt in the tensioner / TB kit.. Makes me think its a typical stretch bolt but it seems redundant on such a setup..

At any rate, i'm sure the top end is in good shape. You would have heard a pretty significant noise had any of the valves clashed etc.

Best bet, just pull the head off in situ, and check it out. it will be obvious if there's any damage.

                Good luck!

Yeah no indication of stretched thread...
I'm probably just gonna do a compression test, and that should determine if my valves are bent.

I have a second motor I am gonna be building for 650+ hp a real monster, hopefully I can take all the knowledge from lessons learned and it'll turn out great. But for now the current setup will be in there for a while until I build up funds again.. 400+hp in a daily will be not bad

Tensioner bolt snapping is common if old tensioner bolt is reused (I was warned about this). Should fit new tensioner bolt when your changing cambelt, tensioner, idler bearing, etc.

If new bolt and snapped, I would think metallurgy of bolt (using a cheap aftermarket bolt???).
