  • 91 GTS winter build (shooting for the stars on a slingshot budget)

I decided to make this thread before i get too far along in my rebuild so if i make a mistake or have an epiphany i can document it for all to learn from, hence half the reason we do this on the forum.
I am in the US (wyoming to be exact) and will be selling parts off the car from the rebuild, already started a threat.... http://forums.gtrcanada.com/parts-sa...tml#post537823

OK to make a long story short, how i came across my skyline....in 2010 after i returned from my tour in Iraq i decided to buy a 1969 camaro for a pretty penny, or 2 million pennies to be exact. after owning the camaro for a while i decided it was cursed since i had to buy a $6000 motor for it then a week later rebuild it for a hyrolock incident. but thats another story for another time. (Camaro 475hp and 490tq all naturally aspirated of course)

I decided i wanted a c6 corvette to twin turbo so i hunted around pretty hard. one day i got an email from a lad wanting to trade his 2003 corvette for my camaro. i didnt want a c5 corvette so i wasnt moved by the offer. Later that same day i came across an ad for a GTST skyline with an rb25det swap, the owner had listed in the ad that he would trade for a corvette....

so yes i emailed the lad about the corvette requesting pictures then immediately forwarding them to the gentleman with the skyline. and naturally after the skyline fellow said he was interested i traded my camaro off for the corvette then 2 days later traded the corvette for the skyline

*note if you do this the court house will not be happy with you*
pictures from previous owner- its too dirty and sad to take a picture of at the moment

car was in decent shape when i got it, minor paint issues and some mechanical imperfections, and your standard wear on an older car. but nothing i cant handle.
The parts that where on the car: (parts said to be on the car)
    swapped rb25det engine and tranny
    GT35 single turbo 12psi
    intake manifold (GReddy?)
    500cc injectors
    fuel rail (GReddy?)
    steal braided line
    Lightweight driveline
after market radiator w/ electric fan
i'll post the few that are left when i remember what they are...

So i drove the skyline around for a bit after i traded for it and started to notice somethings the previous owner did to the car which still makes me firmly believe he wasnt very mechanically inclined.

The first thing i happened to notice besides my tach not working, was the lawn and garden battery he had in the engine bay. with the intercooler piping that was installed they chopped out most of the battery tray to make it fit. so i ordered a trunk relocation kit and did it the right way
-but while doing so i noticed the rats nest of wires from the accessories and what not that i now have to clean, organize, and consolidate to tidy up the engine bay (on my to do list still)

after another few days, the car was running poorly and was hard starting (previous owner said it was the stand alone fuel system)(also told me he checked the compression the day we traded an it was about 115-120 a hole) after checking the compression myself it was at about 100 a hole which broke my heart a little. thus i would have to park the car and save up for a rebuild

I have already installed the new fuelab electronic fuel pressure regulator with corresponding fuel pump which i will try to get pictures of. i tested it out before we started the rebuild and it works great, minus the fuel injectors which are bad. F**K my life.

so i have now started the war against the mechanically uninclined to bring this skyline back to its former glory and started piecing together parts for the rebuild.

first a new fuel rail with 750cc RC injectors, had to order a new wiring harness and custom tweak and sodder new injector connectors to fit the injectors
    [IMG][/IMG]

JWT lightweight flywheel from the nismo shop
    [IMG][/IMG]

obviously going forged pistons and rods
    [IMG][/IMG]
    [IMG][/IMG]

still ordering bits for the fuel system, ill get the specs posted

N1 oil pump, nismo clutch pivot ball, timing belt kit, throwout bearing, poilt bearing, crank collar, temp sensors, tomei oil resistor

got some interior bits in the mail from supraclean, international shipping wasnt the nicest to it but the dash surround and everything was ok

also got new rb25 gasket set from the nismo shop, 2 gaskets where damaged in shipping but the guys at the nismo shop hooked me up with new ones right away, big thanks to those guys

Started to pull out the engine and get it ready to take the J&B Engines to get the machine work done to the block.

started pulling the engine apart but ran into a few snags here and there especially since someone misplaced the 14mm socket

got the rest of the engine taken apart this weekend so its ready to go to the shop, yet i can see why the car had blowby and bad compression.

piston 1 and 6 have had a good run but they are way passed needing to be retired, being able to see the piston ring doesnt equal more hp

piston 2 had some damage a while back it looks like from a broken spark plug or tweaked valve

    Update 11/19/12

no pictures yet bu i just got work from my machine shop tech and i figured i would fill you guys in.
--before i go to in-depth ill update the parts list, my N1 water pump arrived in the mail the other day and my swirl pot for my fuel system rebuild in on the way, i'll try to get those pictures up over Thanksgiving.

NOW for the bass drop, I took the engine in last week and call back on the engine today to see what parts i needed to order. turns out the original crank i planned on using may not be good enough because some spec-ed mother f**ker didnt know how to put a dampener on a crank soooo I decided to call wossner and beg them to let me swap my piston kit for an 87mm rb26 piston kit and now i am on the hunt for either an rb26 engine and or a rb26 crank to swap into my 25 block.
--this means i will end up haulting production on my head that may not be good enough to use because there was not an adequate amount of oil supplied to the cams which as we all know scared the cam journals sooooo that could be another hit in the wallet.
--Never the less i will not accept defeat and i will re-divert my funds to an rb26 swap either internals or actual full block swap.

    FML

I'll try to post pictures and fill you guys in this week when i learn more about the situation and decide what i want to do, if anyone has any ideas for me, give it a post and i'll see what comes around.

    Cheers

hoping after a good tune i'll get past 500hp while still keeping it streetable, id like to use it for drag, and track. my next big step is going to port/polish the head, tomie 256 cams, stick 1mm oversize valves in it and replace the valvetrain. already have a package deal lined up with ferrea but like i said i have to start at college more to afford it. im shooting to have the engine back in and running by the beginning of march so i can go to TX2K13 and compete with it, wouldnt mind hitting skycruise one time but its pretty far for me
      thanks for the subscription

Great start! Out of curiosity what is standard compression for an rb25? Can't wait to see more

not sure exactly what the standard compression is for the rb25 it will very depending on the meter you use, whether the engine is hot or cold and other mild differences but i went into it expecting to rebuild the motor when it had 125psi since that is low for a car, was surprised it even started with 100 psi. yeah i enjoyed the camaro but it was cursed, almost had an anxiety attack everytime i drove it since i expected something to quit working on it. i also had a 70 chevelle ss clone i was working on as a rolling project but someone made a offer i felt i should take.

thanks for looking into the project guys i'll be ordering more parts shortly and am hoping to start reassembling the engine over christmas break, the machinist is pretty full up so it will take some time to get the block and head back

Great looking car. Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Is that your wide band sensor I see right after your turbo outlet close to the firewall?
Not sure what brand you use, but I know the AEM one says 36 inches at least after the turbo.... May want to look into it?

                    Regardless, good looking car mate.

thanks for the comments, yes the wideband is there, thats where the last tuner wanted it but ill look into it more thanks for the heads up. i guess everyone is more shocked than i am that i sold my camaro and 70 chevelle ss clone project haha its ok ill let everyone know when i get another one but its just not practical for me at the moment. i have my hands full helping my friend supercharge his 67 chevelle.
                      updates soon

The only update I have as of now is that it will be at least 8 weeks till I get my crank from Japan. I am swapping rb26 internals into my block and the N1 crank i ordered is estimated to ship then. fml i know. I will have more time to work on misc stuff on the car after finals next week given the weather allows me to, I'll post pictures and updates of what i work on while we wait for the rb26 parts to arrive
                          Cheers

                            Update 4/4/13

Sorry its taken so long to get back to the post for those of you who where following, I am looking at getting the engine back from the shop next month (if my bearings come in on time) since I finally paid off the build and decided what to do.

I have more parts sitting at home waiting for the engine so once I get it back it will be non stop till its done. As far as what I decided on the head, I am going to run adjustable cams as well as tomei 256 cams and leave the rest stock for now. I dont have the funds to build the head yet so maybe next year. I will be running ARP head studs though.

As far as the block, I sourced an N1 rb26 crank as well as swapped wossner for 87mm rb26 pistons. so my rb25 block will have Godzilla guts.

                            [IMG][/IMG]

                            [IMG][/IMG]

Also picked up the new Greddy Profec boost controller

                            [IMG][/IMG]

Since my last post I have slowly been cleaning the residual oil from my engine bay as well as trying to clean and untangle wires. I have also gutted the fuel line and have been working on rebuilding the fuel system. No sure if I posted it earlier but I do have the Fuelab electronic fuel pressure regulator and matching fuel pump which I am installing in my trunk since it is too expensive to have under the car. I am done with school for the summer in the first week of may so once I get the engine back the build will be under full force until its done

                            cheers

Here is the progress Ive made over the summer with the build. Turns out the winter build according to Murphy's Law becomes a full year and a half build ha. So over the summer I sunk every spare dollar I had in to parts and getting the engine together. Mission accomplished there but seeing how the head was ran low on oil I had to get a new (used) head in better shape, which i ran into problems with changing out the manifold studs.

                              [IMG][/IMG]

                              [IMG][/IMG]

RB26 pistons, rods and crank assembled into the RB25 block with ARP main kit

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Block fitted with ARP head studs, N1 water pump and N1 oil pump

                              [IMG][/IMG]

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Here is where i ran into issues with the new head. the manifold studs where not long enough for my manifold as well as 2 studs being broken inside the head. I hand to break out the tap set.

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Block coming together with Tomei exhaust cam gear and rb26 ATI super damper, as well as tomei timing belt

                              [IMG][/IMG]

                              [IMG][/IMG]

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Block mostly together and ready to be dropped into the car

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Block back in the skyline just in time to go back to college so it will be a while before it is ready yet. Need to pull the harness and rebuild it as well as clean up the rest of the wiring. Note, probably should not assume dropping in an RB engine is as easy as the classic muscle cars, couple hours and a few bloody knuckles later it was all bolted up. live is a little harder when you dont have the equipment to drop the engine and tranny in the car as one piece.

NOT PICTURED: I did get a JWT clutch for the skyline but I can find the picture I had of it, but it is definitely in there because it almost made me lose a finger aligning the tranny when the weight shifted on the jack.

                              [IMG][/IMG]

Here is the beginning of the fuel system rebuild, fixed a copper pipe to the original fuel cover with the FUELAB filter. I have about 20 feet of new steel braided hose routed through the car and working on hooking it all up with the full FUELAB pump and electric pressure regulator.

All in all the new projected date the car will be running will be mid to end Feb 2014 I still need to get it down to Denver after that to MAC performance to have it dyno tuned. I'll update you guys with pictures and video of the car when its closer. Sorry for the ruff updates, building a car as you all know takes time and money and if you dont have one you have the other, as well as Murphy's Law always lingering behind us. I wanted to do this post not because I'm good at it but to give some visual representation to the rb26 swap inside a rb25 block for those like me who migh not have the money for a full conversion
