  • motor making a knocking noise...

okay well i bought the car just about 2 weeks in and now there is some what i believe is rodknock.
anyways from my understanding if it is i should here a constant knocking noise but the weird part is it only does it at a certain rpm and sometimes it dosent seem like it does it. it seems 1st and 2nd it knocks around 2500 and then in third i get it to 4000rpm and no knocking let off and push in the clutch nothing, i checked the exhaust manifold ect. to see if hopefully something is loose and rattling but nothing!
it was dark out so ill see in daylight but do i have a serious problem as in my motor just kicked the bucket i think it did im more asking cause i dont want to park it for a few weeks while i swap the motor. since i need a car to drive.
there are no codes on the ecu at all i was expecting something oil is topped up and all. and the weird part is i was just leisurley driving along and all the sudden it made a weird nois i was liek dont tell me...:hit_head: :-x

When the bottomend goes you'll hear a big knocking sound, like someones hitting metal with a hammer. Especially if it has destroyed the bigend bearing (conrod to crank bearing). It will be there all the time.

Sometimes the hydraulic lifters get noisy and need to be replaced or I think run a thicker oil to quieten them down. Also I think there is a additive that can quieten them down.

On some cars it can be due to a twin plate clutch.

^Exactly what Skym said...is there any chance in you being able to record the sound?

Check to see if the crank pulley bolt is loose

This is what a noisy lifter sounds like on a RB25DET -

dont get mad at me but how bad is this for the motor if it is lifter noise, and how hard would it be to change. or how long do you think it would last if i were to drive it niceley, just keep the rpms under 3000 and not hit boost.

im getting my winter beater ready right now buit it is still going to be a day or 2 atleast

well i think it kicked the bucket it is knocking quite abit now so looks like i will have to do a motor swap

if anyone has done one how long did it take? i have done a few motor changes and clutches in the last year or so so im not realy intimidated yet but just curious how much of a pain it is

Thicker oil or just changing oil, filter can quieten them down. Try that first. Sometimes the noise could be the result of a oil filter flow problem and changing oil filter cures the problem. Should change oil, filter every 5000km or 3 months on a turbo car, whichever comes first.

I run 10W60 and it's winter. As M-spec has already mentioned, run a thicker oil in summer. Especially when engine gets older. Also I find the thicker oil makes the engine feel sluggish until engine gets really warm but engine runs smooth.

I'm willing to bet you could easily with 2 people change the motor/tranny in a gts-t within a day.

Some freakish people get gtr motors out in a day. GTS-T motor comes out with the tranny, how easy can you ask for? lol.

Skyline engines do not have Push rods! Or do you mean connecting rods to the piston head?

150,000 km? or Miles? 150,000 kilometers isn't much for these motors unless they have been severely abused. lol
