  • RB26 cams in an RB20...i did it...kinda

ok. today was the day. they were going in. first off big shout out to Jon (dragonhumper) and his brother in law for getting me out of the jam. and to brian and jordan (brianv8 and j-ran) for the help.

    parts:
    used rb20 cams
    adjustable cam gears

so in and out if it were not for the few snags would have taken 2.5 - 3 hours total
    so it went like this.
    1. jack up the car
    2. remove intake piping, valve covers, timing cover.
    3. drain and remove rad
    4. remove belts, crank pulley and remove lower t-belt cover
    5. remove timing belt
    6. remove old cams...
...and we hit our first issue. cam bearing caps. 4 of the bolts were ceasing. this is where by pure luck jon was around the corner and ended up stealing his brother in law and helped us out of a jam getting the cams installed.
    7. then i installed the timing belt
    8. turned the crank by hand to check for valve clearance (none, *sigh of relief)
    9. (assuming the obvious) i re-assembled engine.
    10. check and see if it runs. and issue no.2... no.
    11. check spark (ok), check fuel (ok), compression...30 psi. F U C K.
    12. the next few hours were spent adjusting the gears until we got the compression up so i could drive it home as i was taking up jordan's friends driveway. long story short i must have been out a tooth installing the timing belt. it ended up running (about 80-90 psi compression) with 16 degrees retard on the intake and about 10 degrees retard on the exhaust.

issue no.3 occured while adjusting the cam gears. the allen head bolts were cheap as hell, wouldnt fit any metric or SAE allen key, and ended up stripping 4/10. so tomorrow will include new bolts for the cam gears, and i will be re-doing the timing (resetting the timing belt) and getting it running again.
stay tuned for pics, videos, possibly lots of cursing.

better than when my wastegate clip broke and the actuator popped off. ran good, little power. timing is WAYYY out.

so have any of your pistons played with the valves? Kinda looks/sounds that way.

no, before every time i fired it up i checked it by hand. shouldnt have had any piston valvey lovin. we just lost compression the more it went out. lowest it went was about 30 psi. we will see tomorrow.

i dont think they did, we had everyting a tooth off and instead of tearing everything off to re-do the timing belt we opted to adjust the hell out of the gears temporarily just to get charlie home. we turned the crank fully by hand before every start up as well just incase. We will find out tomorrow though when charlie gets off work.

if i had bent valves wouldnt i have 0psi? because it ran smooth all the way home. when it wouldnt run it was at about 30 psi, when it did run it was about 80-90psi. just little power and about 50% of on boost performance.

Hydraulic lifters might be too tall. There's no way to adjust the height with Hydraulic lifters. With Solid lifters you have the shims that control the height.

I had the same prob.... 80psi in the cylinders and couldn't grab a steady idle. it actually drove pretty decent, but the idle was too much to deal with.

stock cams are back in and it feels great.

did you have adjustable cam gears in yours or stock gears?
i know my timing is WAY off right now. so when i get home from work i am re-doing the timing belt then adjusting the gears from there.

^ GReddy gears.... I got up to 10 degrees advanced on the intake and just gave up.

it's a high hp daily driver so I don't wanna deal with idle probs.... I'm gonna adjust the stock gears on the dyno and try to bring boost on sooner.

                        and the exhaust?

You guys should try and measure the base circle diameter of the rb20 cams, it seems that could be the largest problem.

got the timing belt installed properly
runs like it ran last night when i left. but now the gears are at 0 / 0
