ok. today was the day. they were going in. first off big shout out to Jon (dragonhumper) and his brother in law for getting me out of the jam. and to brian and jordan (brianv8 and j-ran) for the help.
parts:
used rb20 cams
adjustable cam gears
so in and out if it were not for the few snags would have taken 2.5 - 3 hours total
so it went like this.
1. jack up the car
2. remove intake piping, valve covers, timing cover.
3. drain and remove rad
4. remove belts, crank pulley and remove lower t-belt cover
5. remove timing belt
6. remove old cams...
...and we hit our first issue. cam bearing caps. 4 of the bolts were ceasing. this is where by pure luck jon was around the corner and ended up stealing his brother in law and helped us out of a jam getting the cams installed.
7. then i installed the timing belt
8. turned the crank by hand to check for valve clearance (none, *sigh of relief)
9. (assuming the obvious) i re-assembled engine.
10. check and see if it runs. and issue no.2... no.
11. check spark (ok), check fuel (ok), compression...30 psi. F U C K.
12. the next few hours were spent adjusting the gears until we got the compression up so i could drive it home as i was taking up jordan's friends driveway. long story short i must have been out a tooth installing the timing belt. it ended up running (about 80-90 psi compression) with 16 degrees retard on the intake and about 10 degrees retard on the exhaust.
issue no.3 occured while adjusting the cam gears. the allen head bolts were cheap as hell, wouldnt fit any metric or SAE allen key, and ended up stripping 4/10. so tomorrow will include new bolts for the cam gears, and i will be re-doing the timing (resetting the timing belt) and getting it running again.
stay tuned for pics, videos, possibly lots of cursing.
