  • rb20det turbo?

Hey guys whats up. I think my turbo is about to give up on me. I have the original rb20 turbo in my gts-t and it has 150k Km's on it. I got the car tuned a week ago and here mis what happens. When the turbo starts compressing i hear a loud noise coming from the passenger side of the car as if my turbo's shaft play was huge. the thing is: It doesnt puff oil, makes no noise while daily driving or at idle, and when i go full throttle doesnt even lack boost. Only makes a real loud noise. I cant say if its grinding or what ever i dont know enough about turbos to tell. one funny thing is that if i go full throttle and the road has a imperfection on it, when i hit it i hear the noise or once in a while on a flat road too. If ever you guys think its the turbo, would you fit back a rebuilt rb20 turbo in it or put a rb25?

    My setup is pretty basic:
    Fmic
    3inch exhaust
    walbro fuel pump
    Fuel pressure regulator

Do rb25 turbos require a new tuning when installed?

    thanks guys.

When older the shaft tends to get more play that destroys the oilseal on front of turbo and compressor wheel can touch compressor housing (wail sound around 0 on boost gauge). That's the way stock RB20 turbo failed on my cars RB20DET.

With hybrid RB20 turbo (what some call a rebuilt turbo) it tends to go lean at 3500rpm+ (safe 11.8:1 A/F ratio at peak hp which is around 7500rpm) with only 12psi, intake, exhaust, BOV mods. So you'll need a retune, especially with a FMIC that leans it out even more. Stock ECU pulls ignition timing (when it detects knock) after around 3500rpm, so stops engine from blowing up. Stock RB25 turbo shouldn't be any different.

Usually a fuelpump upgrade makes it run richer at mid to high rpm, so might help stop engine from knocking.

For tuning I would suggest Nistune for stock ECU on a tight budget or Vipec, Link ECU if you have the $$$.

What direction do u plan on goin with your car?
If you r keepin it mild and dont plan on uping the boost any, get a used RB25 turbo.
If u plan on needing more boost(14psi +) get a better aftermarket turbo like trickey has for sale.

2860 wont be a bolt on the RB20. it's a T25 on the RB26 manifold where as gts-t is T3. i personally bought a GT2871 with T3 flange and a separate wastegate kit, came up a bit pricey in the end but it worked with some mods. you'd need to do custom piping for turbo elbow/dumppipe and downpipe though.
