  • rb20 head rebuild questions

soo, i was planning on just doing the block with oem head gasket and then rebuild the head another time and upgrade gasket..ive decided to stop beating around the bush and just gonna get it all done.

so ive done some research as to whats done when rebuilding an engines head and things needed are: regrinding the valve surface, regrinding of the cylinder head seats, new valve seals & valve guides,

and ill be doing a port, and polish too...why not right?

    - Im wondering how do i know if i need new valves and/or springs? or should they just me changed for maintenance?
    - the list i have above, is that stuff ALWAYS needed?
    - and if i were to replace everything, is oem sufficiant or are upgrades needed?
    - my block has oem internals with acl bearings and arp everytihng.

my goal now is to make the engine nice and solid, so when i have some extra money i can just drop some cams in and up the turbo.

EDIT: ive done further research, and the master plan will be:

    - reusing the valves (if theyre not damaged)
    - new springs? ( been told these can be reused unless these engines have issues with them) <--need gurus on that one plz
    - new lifters ( ive been told after time these can become soft reducing maximum lift)
    - new guides
    - new seals

along with machining: decking(if needed), port + polish, regrinding the valve surface, regrinding of the cylinder head seats.

SO, let me know how the "master plan" looks and if im missing anything.
also, i want to get my tomei head gasket while machining is getting done. whats a safe size to get in case the surfaces don't need to be decked? 1.3?

would oem head internals along with port and polish be good enough for 400hp?

stock head is capable of 400hp.

I have personally driven a 380WHP rb20 with only a turbo and fuel upgrade with a rom chip. Stock internals.

400hp at engine can be done with boost up mods (including turbo, etc), stock bottomend.

Lifters are not worth doing unless they are faulty or fitting new cams with new valve springs. Like with most things they don't last forever.

Stock RB20DET head with stock cams + adjustable camgears, shimmed stock valve springs has proven to be good for around 500rwhp.

to get around 400whp ill i did to the head was get it decked, tomei mls gasket, had the valves lapped, new valve stem seals total = $450

it actually all depends on how much the machine shop needs to take off. i was supposed to get an 80.5 x 1.5mm and by mistake they sent me a 1.2mm but because my head was not warped at all he barley took anything off so ill be safe with the 1.2mm

Pur auto said for me to go with a 1.5mm that will help spool my holset. if that helps any

there's no point if you're just trying to hit 400hp.

                maybe 500+, sure.

i was told the guides sometimes get damaged on removal so just replace with oem. and i was thinking the springs because there probably worn out 80xxxkm on them
