  • RB20DET Upgrade Advice

    Hey Guys,

Wondering if you guys can give me some advice with which route to take with my project. Have a RB20DET in my 240sx and at the moment its basically stock, but the goal (conservative I know) is 275 to the ground. Wanted to hear from some of you guys to see what you suggest I do. Like which turbo or injectors to go with to accomplish this?

    - Injectors was think thinking the 440CC's from Deatschwerks, but open to suggestion??? Hearing I would need 550's but again I have no idea....

    - Turbo; already have a amperformance downpipe and elbow which I'm happy with. So would like to keep that set up with the HKS Sport exhaust I have. If I went with an upgrade from ATP or THmotorsports I would have to figure out the flange problem (5 bolts as opposed to 6 factory flange). Was thinking about doing the Cherry Turbo option, (quoted 750.00 for the hybrid from him), but don't have to go that route???

    - ECU No idea whatsoever. Any advice as to what to go with and why I would appreciate it (nistune, AEM, etc)

I know obviously there are a bunch of other things needed when upgrading just a bit stuck on these main things. Now money will not be a big deal on this project, so when I say conservative its just because I'm not to power hungry, as opposed to broke! Just looking for decent reliable everyday driving with some decent power behind it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can achieve just under that rwhp (255-268rwhp) with stock RB20 turbo at 14.5psi (if stock turbo is still in good condition and hasn't done high km). It's roughly around 330hp max at engine.

Basic boost up mods (stock engine) -

    Stock airbox or podfilter.
FMIC (stock GTR or similar size)
    Deatschwerks 550cc injectors
    Deatschwerks 255lph fuel pump
Deatschwerks fuel pump hard wire kit
    3" exhaust from turbo
    Z32AFM + Z32AFM plug (wired in)
    Electronic boost controller
    Nistune for stock ECU
NGK PFR6A or PFR7A sparkplugs with 0.8mm gap (let tuner choose)
    Clutch upgrade

For track, road use on a reasonable budget add a hybrid stock RB20 turbo (Garrett TB03 CHRA or basically same non ballbearing CHRA as used on non ballbearing VG30ET stock turbo and steel wheels to suit in machined out stock housings, ported wastegate hole with bigger wastegate flap) and can achieve similar rwhp at lower boost level and increases transient response. It also means you get to reuse parts above and gives engine that stock sleeper look. This hybrid stock RB20 turbo should produce 350hp at 14.5psi on pump gas or 20hp more than stock turbo at same boost level.

Suggested additional parts for reliability -

Engine oilcooler, 1.2mm 80.5mm Tomei headgasket, ARP head bolts (correct for application, as there are different types), RB20DET repair gasket kit.

If using car on racetrack, nismo lowtemp thermostat, N1 waterpump, upgraded radiator (Tabata as it looks good / high quality and can use stock plastic radiator shroud), air separation / header tank kit (Greedy, ARC, etc).

If running E85 I would fit Link or Vipec ECU, GM ethonal content sensor, etc (can gain up to 50whp at same boost level).

With injector size you can use injector calculator (E85, pump gas, etc) -

    Fuel pump calculator -

But I learnt to always size injectors bigger than what you need (if power bug hits and want to crank boost up or just to run injectors at lower duty cycle for reliability, at least 80% duty on racetrack).

Couldnt hurt you go to a bigger fuel pump like a stealth pump or Dw 340 if you have a FPR.
Traction is optional, so are zipties

It's just with bigger lph fuelpump than you need for injectors is moving more fuel at idle, etc and the heat that gets transfered with it heats up the fuel in fuel tank. If run a fuel cooler (like they do on a N1 / endurance GTR racecar) it should be ok to run a bigger lph fuelpump.

Thanks guys for the input, appreciate the recommendations, will take these into consideration. Should have mentioned that I also have some other mods besides the aforementioned.

          RB20DET 92 S13
-Wiring Specialists Swap harness complete engine trans
          -CXracing front mount intercooler kit
-walbro 255 (or so I'm told from previous owner, but I believe him)
          -AEM Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
          - N60 maf (thinking could be a problem as I assume I should be running a J60)
          - hks sport exhaust
          - amperformance downpipe
          - pop filter (random autozone one, mine was beat had no choice)
          - NGK BCPR6ES's

Have just need to mount up.....(Lazy)
          - AEM UEGO Wideband AIR/FUEL gauge
          - AEM Fuel Pressure Gauge
          - Apexi NEO may have to sell it as everyone tells me not to have one....

Have to look into the Nistune, seems to be popular, was think about the AEM EMS as I can get those in the 1500.00 range, depends on the cost of either and the pro's/con's of running either or. But again thanks everybody for the input.

You pretty much have what you need already, 3" exhaust, fmic, adjustable FPR, GTR Injectors & Resistor, RB25 Turbo, Z32 maf, For the ecu either get Nistune or get your stock ecu rom tuned by CarlH on the nicoforums. Apexi SAFC will work but not recommended.

Can achieve it with what you have + Nistune + Z32 AFM + Z32 AFM plug that's wired in, FPR adjusted to suit, hardwire fuelpump.

This RB20DET (330hp at engine with stock turbo) has those specs you mentioned in post + Z32 AFM, Z32 AFM plug, Apexi PowerFC (has stock airbox), etc -

Thanks to Specialised Driving Services for allowing us to try out this fantastic in-car camera system.

It can pass a boosted up stock R32 GTR (limited to stock engine, stock turbo in Targa).

But best to fit bigger injectors, as stock injectors would be running close to 100% duty.
