  • Noises after gear oil change

I am new to the skyline scene. I just recently purchased my first skyline and brought it back to the USA. This is what happened. I drained the gear oil through the plug at the bottom and then realized that I could not get the filler plug off. So I put the gear oil through the shifter. After I got it all put back together and took it out for a drive I noticed that the clutch felt way easier to push in and whenever I would push in the clutch while still in gear going down a hill it sounded like the gears were grinding. What could be the issue? I used red line 75w90. What would be the cause of the soft clutch? what would I have to do to fix it or have it fixed?

    Thanks

Which transmission is in your car (my experience is more with GTRs)? If you have ATESSA you have destroyed your transmission by draining the oil out of the gear box and adding it to the transfer case.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

The gear level opens to a transfer case not the transmission itself . As Bobbo said you have have just ran a dry transmission.

It's not a gtr. I read on a different forum saying you can add the gear oil through the shifter with a gtst.

          Noises after gear oil change

I never heard of it neither have I done anything like that with my gtst. I think all your oil is on top of the baffle and not getting to your synchros...and that's 4+ L of oil.....in the words of mike Holmes..."Make it right"....ok maybe you can add oil through there but how do you verify the level...????
Btw 75w90 red line is for the diff...MT90 is for your box!!! You put too thin of oil in the Box...

Drain it and put in MT90 ....it's gonna be crunchy when it's cold but after it's warmed up you won't regret it. Great oil. Took it to the track last year and have It in for two years already....checked it today....still a bit red! Thinking of going royal purple for the diff though...

Should be able to pump it in on the side of gearbox when on a hoist. Same way you refill the diffhead.

^fill plug is always a biach to get off and that's the case. Can't really use a 2 foot breaker bar when vehicle is on jack stands.

Trev how much were the duties and fees you had to pay when importing and what did they base your value off of? I have my 1990 GTR down in Texas. Right now I just keep it registered and insured in Alberta and keep my Alberta drivers license since I'm in ft Mac 2 weeks and only in TX a week. If I get stopped on my days of I just say I'm visiting and they don't mess with me.

Confirming you CAN fill the Trans through the shifter opening on a GTST.
I found it easier after draining it to take out the fill plug and fill it through the shifter hole until it comes out the fill hole. Much easier than crawling under with a fill pump or squeeze bottle....
RP 75w90 is fine for the tranny, used it for years.
Personal choice, it WON'T damage anything.

Getting the car officially imported across the border was surprisingly easy. It just took a very long time. I was at the border for about 4 and a half hours before they finally signed the paperwork saying I can get it licensed and registered in the US. The only fee I came across was a "General Duty" fee that costs 100$ and to license the car, it was 450$. Since you are already in possession of the car, the fee will vary. Im fairly positive it will not cost as much since you didn't drive over there, purchase the car, and drive it back the next day.

On another note, the tranny shop I took it to to get inspected stated that the throwout bearing is bad which is causing the strange noises, and the syncros are out in 1st and 2nd. A new tranny is in the near future.
