  • Top speed at 300-400 hp

    I am curious, I got about 350 hp, at the weels and got Mine's speedo. However, the fastest I have hit on Dunnvile and Shanonville racetracks was 190km/h in 4th (and then straight ends).

    May be other people at other race tracks in the country or night blasting on a highway did that: What speeds do you roughly hit with 300-400 hp mods.

    Tranny seems to be for high gearing, it feels like the engine will run out of revs at 240-250 km/h.

    Did somebody, with higher hp, creeped close to 300 km/h ?

      :-) ok, let's leave lectures about good & bad aside. And as I told you, I was doing it at the race track, if it makes you happy.

        lol. I'm just messing around. I know for a fact a gtr CAN go 240+ and my gts-t could as well.

        HP really has nothing to do with it. That just tells you how fast you'll get there. It's all in the gearing.

          HP has nothing to do with it?

          If you stuck an 80 horsepower Civic HX motor into a very unaerodynamic GTR body, even with a perfectly spaced 10 speed transmission you would not go very fast at all. Horsepower and COD have a huge role in what kind of a top speed your car can hit.

          So you're telling me a stock GTR with the stock 8000 RPM redline will be able to hit 193 MPH, although just get their very slowly because it doesn't have much horsepower?

            ok, another hypothetical question. Two GTRs with their bad coeficient of drag, with STOCK gearing. One is 500hp, another is 1000hp, both redlining in 5th at 8000 rpm. Will the speed be different?

              uhh, you didn't understand what I meant.

              Take a stock GTR and put it up to a built GTR. Thier TOP speed will be pretty much the same...

              The only thing that could make a difference without going to gearing, is if the built engine can run a higher redline.

              Now if you change the transmission, rear diff ratios etc. THEN it can it's a different story.

              Just because a car has 200 more HP, dosen't mean it can magically go faster, it can just GET there faster. Then sooner or later the stock one will catch up. Could be waaaay later, but it will still eventually get there.

                HP = Speed
                Torque = Acceleration

                It's an age old debate that has never been solved. Higher HP allows for higher top speeds and increased torque gives increased acceleration (how QUICKLY you increase the speed). But in all this, the things that work against you are RESISTANCE in the form of weight, traction, internal friction, AND most importantly, WIND resistance. It's all about efficient aerodynamics in the end. You could have a 1900 RWHP square box and it would run out of road/track before hitting 190 mph or a 400 rwhp GTR with an efficiently designed body kit that would hit 193 mph well before that. Does it actually mean that the latter is faster than the former? I would say yes, but its not as powerful.

                From what I can tell, Daniel basically wants to know if people have reached speeds of more than what he reached at the end of the race straightway. That, is about torque and not necessarily HP, although you do need hp too.

                There is no direct, satisfying answer to this debate. All I believe is that when distance is finite (a specific length of straight track, for example), the acceleration of the car becomes increasingly important. The top speed does NOT change with increase in acceleration, by the way.

                  I was recently clocked at 248 in a pretty much stock engine gtst. stock boost.

                  tq means nothing. 800 hp f1 cars have 200 ft lbs. they would kill any of us.

                  a car with 50hp will top out no matter what it red lines at. Put 1k in a gtr and it will go all the way to it's redline and well beyond if you choose to raise it. Saying they have the same top speed, not on earth. The only thing they share is 9.81 m/s^2.

                  now put longer gears in a under powered car and it will have an even lower top speed.
                  put longer gears in a over powered car and it will have a higher top speed.

                    A stock GTR is NOT going to hit ~194 MPH, which is what you'd be gearing limited to with stock size tires and a stock redline.

                    There is such a thing as WIND RESISTANCE, and that's what you're working against. In a pretty well stock GTR (air filters, test pipe, catback) I hit that around 266 KPH, going off my GPS, not the speedo. Wide open throttle, fifth gear, will not go any faster. Doesn't matter how long I hold it there, the car is NOT going any faster. It takes a certain amount of power to overcome the force being exerted on your car by wind resistance, and rolling resistance of the tires against the ground.

                    There's nothing magical about it, the simple fact is there will come a point where ~280 horsepower can not overcome the drag on the vehicle, and you will not go any faster.

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_(physics)

                    Maybe you should do some more reading. There's such a thing called terminal velocity. Look at a human being falling from an airplane, there is a certain point where you cannot go any faster because gravity cannot overcome the force of wind resistance and you stay at a constant speed. Same goes for a car. You will hit a certain speed where the power from the engine can no longer overcome the opposite force of drag, and you will no longer accelerate.

                    Power to overcome drag, can you dig it?

                      Im a mystifing person, what can I say. The way my explanation started out was wrong and went downhill from there. Everyone has a right thier opinion, if it's wrong then cool. Now that shits been explained properly, I understand it more. I never took Physics in School.

                        drop two hondas from a plane one has 100hp the other has 300hp which one gets to the bottom the fastest

                        oversteer-is when you go off the road backwards and dont see the tree that kills you

                          They both loose. We win because there are two less Hondas in the world.

                            Thank you guys. So, from all the replies I understand that stockish GTR in 300-400 hp range, will top 250~280 km/h. Thank you.
