GTRs and RWD

During Auto X the AWD system on a skyline doesn't actually function really. Its main purpose is to apply power to the front wheels while going straight or almost straight. Unless your GTR spools like a GTS with really small turbo on it you won't notice the AWD system helping you at all because it won't. Auto X starts in first gear, you shift to second and you are in second gear for nearly the entire course. You never hit over 80km/h and that is entering the stop box so you are straight anyways.

Like I mentioned the AWD system will do nothing for you in Auto X.

Would I get rid of the AWD system. Not a chance in hell. Also the GTR wasn't designed to drift. I also highly doubt those claiming you save 400 lbs. I call BS on that. Like Mcfly said... about 100 lbs.

You want to drift it anyways? Get a torque controller set it to full time RWD and drift it.

I went to an autox/drift event in the spring last year (see the pics/video in the media section) and I have to say that RWD GTR's aren't bad.

Also the AWD does function autocrossing - not alot but it does. If the car sees enough wheelspin it will start putting torque to the front wheels regardless of steering wheel position. I have video of me doing some AWD donuts if you'd like to see proof of that. Also, at the drift event I left the AWD activated and it's basically impossible to get the car to rotate in 1st/2nd gear like you need with the AWD active. And really easy without it.


GTR's drive fine in RWD mode, but for me on a street car AWD is king unless it's REALLY light. FD's are more fun on a race track, but GTR's make a better street car because of the AWD.

thats weird, when i ran autox with one of my old gtrs the gauge would go mad on corners and straight. Most i ever hit was 120 though so still in 2nd.

front prop maybe 10 lbs, axles 30, diff 20.

i cant see a savings of more then 100.

The GTR oil pan is 31kgs, RB25 pan is maybe 5kgs?

Let me give you a perfect example. When I bought my car it was mint (I mean MINT). No scratches, dents, and it only had 78K kms on it. I decided to drift with it. Since then, I have bought two front bumpers, one rear bumber, I've replaced the clutch four times and the flywheel twice, my mint Racing Heart C2s are scratched beyond repairing, rebuilt the diff twice and replaced it twice, I have an ugly dent in the rear quarter panel, and the front bumper I'm currently running has a huge paint scrape on the passenger side, and a huge rip on the driver's side.
Now, aside from showing what a crappy drifter I am, I'm also trying to point out what drifting does to your vehicle. Just head down to your local drift track this weekend and check it out. Every serious car there will be held together by zap straps, bondo, and sometimes even mismatched panels.
If you want to just occasionally drift, I can understand that. But if you have any serious love for your car, stick to autox or something similar. I'd say get the controller and keep it AWD.

well I never got a chance to drive that car, but I can tell you first hand its a beast. If I did get a chance to drive it, I dont think it would feel quite right to me in a track setting. I'm just too used to the feel of an awd GTR. It all comes down to preference really though.

You could explode in a straight line with no wheelspin and gain some time, but feel the understeer in the tight corners. R32 atessa is laggy so If you can get on the throttle fast enough you can kick the ass out a bit to counter the understeer.

@ GTRbrian: In a stock GTR atessa is controlled by its own computer. Atessa controllers are all aftermarket or home built.

I highly doubt he was going to pull his engine just to remove a stock oil pan and redrill a rb25/20 pressed one, so i did not include it.

we are talking hundredths of a second here difference in time compared to a 33/34. Watching all the old group a videos though the 32's were always tail happy, not so much with the 34. It can be used in your favor since you could get back on the throttle sooner coming out of the corner straight.

GTS-t weight = 1320kg = 2904lbs
GTR weight = 1480kg = 3256

3256 - 2904 = 352 lbs... thats pretty damn close to 400 to me. Remember the GTR/GTS-4 had a much beefier front subframe too.

The twin turbos and larger intercooler, along with the larger gas tank will also add some weight.

What do you think made Godzilla so great in racing? The AWD system and of course the powerplant. Get a Gts-t and swap in an RB26 if you really want it.

If you're THAT into drifiting IMO, you shouldn't have bought a GTR.

I'm on this side of the line, AWD is what makes the GTR what it is. I thought about removing it when I was rebuilding , but in the end it was one of the reasons I bought the car so I kept it AWD

Buy a 240sx and proceed to beat it. They can be had for 2k for a 89 with 100 raging ka hp !
