    hey guys

i don't mean to beat a dead horse here since i know this has been discussed to death. however, this is kind of a twist.

I have owned two rhd's in the past, both insured under different companies. however, both times the comanies flat out refused to insure the cars since the 10 digit vin could not be input into their systems.

what i have done in the past is have my j-specs re-vinned with a 17 digit Canadaian vin. also this has made things easier, it is a month long process at times and costs $500.

my j-spec supra will be arriving in mid april and i would like to have it insured under its 10 digit vin. i am with a new company now so perhaps they may do it, but in case they are hesitant, what have some of you guys done in the past (said or done) to have yours insured under 10 digits?

    thanks boys

IMO, you should just go and get a proper 17 digit vin. Reason I say this, is when it's input into thier computer with 10 digit, they KNOW it's a RHD. I would want a regular vin as to not "stand out". I have heard stories of people's insurance being cancelled out of the blue just because the car is RHD. If you have a 10 digit vin, it will be harder to single your car out in thier system.

True. BUT if anything is to happen to the car, accident, theft whatever the nature is, if the owner has not declared it to be RHD they can refuse you then. So then You'd be screwed. Id rather know I have insurance and take a chance on them not calling out then rather be denied for a claim once the accident has happened.

This is very true, My friend has a silvia and its insured but the company thinks its like a maxima if anything he will be screwed. See if they can insure it under the 10 digit vin if not switch it. This is up to you also have you asked your insurance company about it?

when you have the car re-vinned they know its rhd anyways

its all done through the ibc and opp (insurance bureau of canada and ontario provincial police)
they send an investigator who does a very thorough write up on the car in question

            500 dollars...what a fu*ken rip....

in BC when you had to get a VIN re assigned...it was 25 dollars...

            jesus...

would take a while but maybe a week or two tops...

            yikes...

now you just have to use the chassis number...go to an auto plan center and register it as a 10 digit...DONE...

thank god i dont live in the east...

but i have a 17 on my car...helps with things such as car fax and ****...

congrats with the new supra. got any photos yet?

im insured with lant (aviva) and there were no problems with the short vin. the only issue with them is the appraisal value.

^^ tried aviva, they turned me down at the first question: do you insure RHD...

I was insured with Nordique. Only problem is that you need a good broker to get you in. My uncle is mine so...

Waterloo, they needed an appraisal of the car to verify that the VIN was in fact the proper one. But no problems to speak of really and they're pretty cheap for me.

Also in toronto you cant tow a car for parking illegaly without a visible dash bin so if you dont have one ie RHD you cant be towed

Since you seem to know what your taking about in Ontario is it illegal to cover the vin on your dash?
