  • Bc: Aircare Omg!!!!!!!!

    Ok so...

My car needs to be aircared within 2.5 months, as I failed one as I was insuring it for the second time since F.O.B. I got the 3 months conditional insurance for now.

Car had been off road for 3 months between the initial insurance and the current one. For basic information:

The FOB car was a pretty much stock HCR32 except:

    13 PSI boost
    Atmospheric BOV
    High flow muffler

When the car came back on the road these were added:

    FMIC
    Apexi intake
    Aluminum rad
    14 PSI boost

I cannot get the car to pass aircare. I need tips/help to pass as I am adding a 3" test pipe, 3" downpipe, GTR injectors, and a tuned ECU. I figure I would have a better chance passing with the current conditions than after these mods.

    Here are my results:

    Attempt 1: FAILED (miserably)

Hydrocarbons: (g/km) ALLOWABLE: 0.5000 MY READING: 1.8639 (jeebus...)

Carbon Monoxide (g/km) ALLOWABLE: 9.3200 MY READING: 10.0763

    NOx (g/km) ALLOWABLE: 1.24 MY READING: 0.6512

My cat works, as NOx was good. However I realized later that your car had to be somewhat warm before doing Aircare (dyno for 4 minutes at various speeds up to 90 kph) The car had been on for only 5 minutes prior to the test as I was in a rush, and it also ran on 98 Octane (mostly Toluene in the tank from before storing the car, I totally forgot) :hit newb: :hit_head:

So I decided to attempt again, this time I siphoned out the high octane fuel, put in 90 octane, with abit of methyl hydrate, and turned the boost down to 10 PSI. Plus I revved my engine for a good 20 minutes before to make sure the cat was hot and working better. I got better results, but still failed.

    Attempt 2: FAIL

    HC: 0.9236 g/km reduced from 1.86 g/km but still higher than 0.500 g/km
    CO: 5.8608 g/km reduced from 10.0763 g/km PASS
    NOx: 0.2332 g/km reduced from 0.5280 g/km PASS

I had all day to do this, and was determined to pass, so I went again after revving my engine at 4000 RPM for 10 minutes to make my cat even hotter to make sure all the excess fuel got burnt. Numbers improved, but still no pass. I put in more Methyl hydrate.

    Attempt 3: FAIL

HC: 0.7537 g/km reduced further, but still failed by 0.2 g/km!!!
CO: 2.6692 g/km reduced even further, passed with flying colours.
NOx: 0.2689 g/km slightly higher, but passing with flying colours.

Still too much excess fuel... wtf!! This is starting to cost me quite a bit... I was running low on fuel so I put in 5 bux of 87 octane in. Revved the engine abit to keep similar temperature I blanked my BOV off in the parking lot, incase that was causing richness. WRONG

    Attempt 4: MEGA FAIL

HC: 1.1687 g/km Jeebus, went up dramatically. Failed miserably.
CO: 4.4190 g/km Went up as well. PASS
NOx: 0.3900 g/km Went up as well. PASS

I want to try ONE more time, and that's it. This HAS to pass. Any suggestions? I've tried pretty much all the tips given in the past on SEARCH and from other people. What is wrong with my car !!!!

Thanks alot if you can help.

go in and say your car is 4wd so they only do an idle test. make sure there doing a grey market vehicle emissions test. Mine failed the first time because a the guy tested my motor to the standards of a n/a KA24 out of a 240 and I was rolling. Went to canadian tire told them its 4wd they did an idle test passed instantly.

reving it for only 20 mins will do pretty much next to nothing. go for a very spirited drive on the highway for a good 30mins-1 hour to get the cat all warmed up properly. also run the 91 octane with the methel hydrate and you should pass no problem.

                My Simple Solution..

"Move" in with a Buddy that lives out side the Aircare zone, Vancouver Island, Kelowna, Kamloops. Get your Change of address on your Drivers License.. Get insurance in forementioned city..

Go back to your your life..

I have been here in "Aircare Zone" for 4 years, but i still "live" on the island..

                Cheaper insurance as well..

                  relax... mine failed too before..

lower boost close to stock, change no2 sensor, run 94 octane for 30 minutes and go for the test.

                  That should let you pass..

And sci got my car through aircare while i was at work for a reasonable fee. there were like no emissions, and i was running gtr injectors, i belive they retarded the timing and what not

Thanks for all the tips and replies guys, I appreciate it.

As for Octane, on the paper, it appears that low octane is getting better results. I'll stick with low octane, and make sure it doesn't ping while I warm my car up.

Methyl Hydrate is stove fuel, which is used pretty much on any outdoor camp fuel system. Those seals are not getting eaten by methyl hydrate (I had one for 4 years now, and it's still holding) I think the injector seal damage is just a load of BS.

As for Takeda, nothing personal, but I'd rather spend 300 on upgrades than trying to pass my car for aircare. I kind of like tackling this with research and adjustment (as annoying as it is).

Any other handy tips? My car is NOT being tested under the grey market value, as it is registered as 2.0 L, RWD, and the curb weight it was registered in.

I'm going to attempt again when it gets abit nicer outside (where is out summer dammit)

Any other tips would be appreciated. Maybe retard my CAS?
