    • We ended up with 2 blown motors .. the second blew up (well spun another bearing) just after it got painted. we basically ran out of time (with our budget) to run the 08 Targa, we figured we would have a much better and safer car if we waited until the 09 Targa

      • Budget

Well I can not say I am surprised. I have many years experience with cars and building and I have discovered being a new GTR owner that there is no such thing as Budget and GTR I have had mine 3 months and gone through 3 builds of motors.

New or machined everthing, pumps, bearings, gaskets, seals, rings. Have the crank crack tested and polished, make sure all your parts are cleaned and blown out, motor dipped and drained and blown out, all clearances respected, chase your threads.

You can build a used motor and hope for the best but it is really hit and miss. One thing for sure, when I read you were gong to drive cross Canada in a Used motor in a Skyline I gritted mt teeth (THIS COMING FROM A TRUE NISSAN GUY) build a new motor to spec and baby it all the way through the break in and then go nuts.

Not the same with other Nissan motors in my experience.

Hats off guy's and I hope you make it this year if so we will see you there.

        • Thanks Drew, ya Im not a big fan of early RB26's either, its too bad we did not build the Vspec motor up a bit, however it was just supposed to be a shake down motor for the suspension set up. Tyndango was supposed to build us a solid motor but he bailed on us. but we are going to get a brand new block from Nissan thats going to be built up properly

            • .... and as a two time Targa competitor (2005 & 2006), if there is anything I can offer in the way of help, questions answered, etc. Let me know. I'd love to see a GT-R actually make it there someday - probably not me though.

Open - the green Datsun 510 (Car #101 both years). I had to run in that class due to some minor engine & drivetrain mods I did to the car. In 2005 I went out on Day 3 due to a broken driveshaft. In 2006 I crashed out on the last day - a 6" spruce prevented me from going for a dip in the Atlantic.

                      • Ezzie ...sounds like you had fun both years though, there must be many close calls around the course, I think Ill have to get a set of water wings for the drivers that red porsche took a nice dip

heres a question what tires did you run, Ive heard many people say run a rain tire because the weather changes fast and would offer a bit more traction on the looser and ruffer road conditions but the highway runs sound like a slick would be ideal .... hmmmm maybe sipe the slicks
                        what do think?

                        • i wish i had the $ to do the targa. i was speaking with a guy on the weekend about it. he said their team's budget in the past was $40k. that is without the car obviously. he said it could probably be done on the cheap for about $15k. ouch. regardless, i'd love to participate one day... i have a place to stay when it goes down the burin penninsula. it truly is a unique event.

                          • Yes, the cost of racing is insaine, that was pretty much what was holding us up for the 08 Targa. now with the economy the way it is the 09 Targa will feel the crunch since the entrance fee is in the thousands

                              • Did you happen to see the 08 Targa on speed the other night ? there was a few good crashes (poor mini and pulsar) and a few houses got hit lol but over all looked like a great event ...really wish we made it out but there is next year. over all I would say that sweet group B Audi Quattro was of the the best prepped car for the event and it showed.

Yes many extra parts will be needed ....one team went through 3 motors. we are going to need some really beefy drive line and suspension bits thats for sure

BTW for any one who has note seen the Targa yet it will be on again on
