BROMONT, Quebec – A Canadian woman on long-term sick leave for depression says she lost her benefits because her insurance agent found photos of her on Facebook in which she appeared to be having fun.

Nathalie Blanchard has been on leave from her job at IBM in Bromont, Quebec, for the last year.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits from insurance giant Manulife.

But the payments dried up this fall and when Blanchard called Manulife, she says she was told she was available to work because of Facebook.

She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on Facebook, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on a sun holiday.

Blanchard said Manulife told her it's evidence she is no longer depressed. She's fighting to get her benefits reinstated and says her lawyer is exploring what the next step should be.

Blanchard told the CBC that on her doctor's advice, she tried to have fun, including nights out at her local bar with friends and short getaways to sun destinations, as a way to forget her problems.

Manulife wouldn't comment on Blanchard's case, but did say they would not deny or terminate a claim solely based on information published on Web sites such as Facebook.

i have a friend who has major depression issues... there are times when she literally cant get out of bed... you people who say " suck it up " have no idea how bad depression can be... her staying in bed is her sucking it up... otherwise her depression would have killed her by now...

serious major depression is a very hard thing to diagnose, treat and live with... and its so hard for us with out it to understand what they are going through we simply think " suck it up and quit being so lazy " when that kind of comment just makes it worse...

i feel for this woman... shes got a tough road ahead of her

Unless the insurance company has retained a qualified doctor who is able to make a reliable diagnose based on internet photos, I think they'll have a hard time getting away with withholding benefits.

I hate to see 'cheating' as much or more than the next guy, but mental illness is very real. If you've suffer from it you're almost worse off than if you've got a phyical illness as society still has an incomplete and inaccurate perception.

you guys see her cheating the system, i see the insurance company screwing just one more person to save a buck. They will do anything to cheap out and screw people over. 3 cases of her "having fun" so she gets her checks(and im sure small ones) taken away. What is she supposed to take pictures of, her putting a gun to her head or holding a blade to her wrist in bed?

so now they pay these cheesy wanna-be claims people to prowel on facebook to see if they can save another dollar.. get a life people. probably costs the company even more to pay these guys to lurk the internet for some "evidence" then it does just to pay the claim and let people live their lives

If someone is actually depressed, they are NEVER happy. Trust me I had a friend who was diagnosed with depression. No matter what you did he was always grumpy and annoying. If this chick was smiling and looked happy in here photos (a picture is worth a 1000 words) then she was not depressed. Sure she may have been "down" a few days but not depressed.

I too, hate the leechers on the system. Here I am, working a legit job 9-5 everyday and I don't get extended medical. When I'm sick I have to deal with it, pay for the dentist, pay for my eye exams, pay for anything medical related that is beyond "basic care." I have to pay for my medical and here this woman is lucky enough to have an employer who gives her extended medical and she abuses the system.

                        **** her.
