A very pertinent point for me when it comes to metal is that without exception, metal bands produce music - real music and then fill in lyrics out of songs that have been written. Having been a metal musician myself for many years, I know for a fact that the music in metal stands on its own and does not need lyrics to complete it. In a way, for most of real metal, the music is augmented by singing. In the other genres, including alternative rock, nu-metal and grunge, lyrics take precedence over music itself. I would classify Slipknot, Primus and RHCP as exceptions to that rule though. Metal is made by MUSICIANS. Other genres to me are made by showmen/showwomen.

And please dont tell me that Madonna, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, etc., are good singers and real musicians. They are simply performers.
Hah! You could use that same argument for electronica / trance / house etc...

Very true, Rich, but at least there is MUSIC in those genres and they don't depend on lyrics/poetry.

For me music is about music. That's why I listen to metal and classical, which is really the basis of most heavy metal along with blues

I know i'm going to be flamed and ridden hard for this but listen to Abba , if you take the time you'll understand that Abba has some of the most talented musical content , it's amazing technical in it's content and each member brings unique talent that shines.

Any musicians here should listen to "winner takes it all" and really listen to the musical structure , it's amazing.

As far as electronica goes an artist to listen to would be jean michel jarre , another pioneer in music. Albums that stand out would be Oxygene and equinox. Also Mike Oldfield or Rick Wakeman.

I don't know about you guys but i can't stand the **** that is played on the radio these days, todays pop is hideous , Its all created in studios for the artist , hell , they cant even sing these days without their voices being pitch changed on a vocoder. I have my own recording studio at home , i'm predominantly a keyboard player leaning towards synths more than pianos and i could record , mixdown and master todays crap in about an hour using nothing but cubase midi sequencing , battery sampler and my access virus with factory patches. It's obscene!

Where has all the talent and originality gone ?

No more pink floyds, jethro tulls, flaeetwood macs , Chris deburges , Genisis , tina turners , michael jacksons (seriously) or tears for fears.

Its all manufactured crap glued to an image ( Lady GAGA , how i'd love to mace that dirtbag ) !!!

ABBA were a great band. A lot of people will be surprised, but there is an ABBA tribute album created solely by various euro-metal bands, many of them being my favs, like At Vance.

I grew up listening to Oxygene and Equinox, and to me, Jean Michael Jarre Is a living legend. His compositions are as complex as those of Richard Wagner.

I was lucky enough to go see Jean Michel Jarres destination docklands concert back in the late eighties . It was simply astounding , the sheer size of it and the downtown buildings were used as backdrops for his lighting laser show. It was awesome.

Another amazing concert was tina turner , soooo much stage presence . Something Britney spears or Milli Cyrus will never have. Also saw the police before they broke up when sting was with andy summers and stewart copeland . Dang i must be old lol.

Extreme - Extreme better as an album, but you cant go wrong with Sting of the Bumblebee and He Man Woman Hater, lol
RATT - Yes, Invasion of your Privacy was a great album. I think that, and Detonator made them big.
My pics were definately guitar player motivated.

Pornographitti and Back for the Attack are pretty much the Pinacle, or Tour De Force performances by both George Lynch and Nuno Bettencourt. Neither one has done anything comparable since those and they are still looked at as benchmarks today.

I dont know why George Lynch never got the recognition he deserved. To be honest, from a purely musician's perspective, George was not as good back in the day, as he became later on, after he and Don Dokken had a falling out and George went solo. His Lynch Mob stinit was pathetic but afterwards, he has produced some amazing solo albums under his own name. However, I do admit that I still get goosebumps when I listen to Mr. Scary, or Breaking the Chains.

Nuno is another story. That guy was easily the greatest guitarist in his time. While admittedly Extreme wasa funk/fusion band, Nuno had all the signs of a great metal guitarist. His Washburn was my fav guitar, as was Mr. Scary (ESP, I think) of George Lynch. I hear Nuno is now an instructor and does videos of guitar lessons.

Ever heard of STARS (Hear 'n Aid)? It was a song done for charity...a brainchild of Dio and Viv Campbell. There are around 5-6 singers, even more guitarists (Yngwie, George Lynch, Brad Gillis, Dharma, Maiden duo, Viv Campbell, etc..), two drummers and a few bassists. The song is almost 7 1/2 minutes long and the solo itself is around 2:42. I consider STARS as the epitome of metal coming together in its crudest and most beautiful form.

To Cortexx, you're not old, sir. You're just a person with a LOT of experience, lol.

Nate, you always come up with some wonderful stuff. How could I forget Van Halen - Van Halen.....Eruption........one of my all time fav solos.

For Helloween, I would give my vote to Keeper of the 7 Keys 1 & 2, and then perhaps to Master of the Rings (with the new vocalist, Andy Deris). Walls of Jericho was a great power metal album, wayyyy ahead of its time. RIDE THE SKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske were the lifeblood of Helloween, and when they left to form Gamma Ray along with Ralf Scheepers, I think they took a bit of that classic Helloween sound with them.

                    Metal FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya it was a hard thought of the best acdc albums but "let there be rock" should kick razors edge out of there. And yes I love my acdc, I'd listen to it all day everyday

havent heard it but my favourite is show no mercy, i love the old school metal. The intro of face the slayer blows my mind. Nothing new compares to the 70's and 80's and even early 90's metal.

                            Crank it!
