  • rb20det S-10?

So i have a 1990 s-10 thats been sitting in the yard for a couple years now, has a 4cyl 4 speed manual transmission, 2wd, etc.. anyways i was wondering if anyone knows what kind of complications i would run into with dropping a rb20det in it?

I would need the complete engine, transmission and ecu. need to get the drive shaft probably shortened (need skyline rear end as well or s-10 will do?) Might be a bit tricky to get the engine in place where the transmission meets up properly inside the truck but once that was all in place and i started connecting everything connecting the wires shouldnt be too much of a problem, its things like the clutch and brakes that im wondering about. the truck does not have power steering or a/c so im not so worried about that but with it being set up as a rhd and putting it in a lhd my clutch and brakes are going to be on the other side. Im sure there are more complications as well so if anyone could give me a general understanding of things i would run into if i decided to put an rb20det in my little s10 that'd be great.

This is still just a thought so any input is appreciated.

Why not just drop a V8 in it?
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

It's actually not to difficult man. My buddy dropped a 2j into a chevy silverado. Only took like a month of only weekends and some nights. For the drive shaft to tranny you'll need a adapter that goes from 3 bolt to 4 bolt, well at least that's what I made for him and what I will be doing for my 86 ranger ca18det swap I'm doing right away. Best of luck man
Also here's a pic of the adapter I made

Well im looking into this swap more and more everyday, i have 3 - 4 months of time right now and the S-10 has just been parked for years. So if i do decide to take this on, i will need a complete engine, tranmission and ecu w/all wires. But shipping from London to BC, Canada is probably fairly expensive! but PM with what your asking for it, and include shipping cost if you could so i have an idea. thanks!

Well my S-10 probably isnt any wider than a skyline so i was almost thinking of also swapping in a skylines rear axel and diff, havent looked into that much though but it was a thought.

yeah i guess. So since the trucks got no power steering and no a/c, all i really need to do after i get it in place is hook up my electrical, brakes, clutch, and fuel line? will i need a different fuel pump? and am i forgetting anything else?

Yea fuel pump will need to be changed but that's simple. Clutch and brake lines will need modification. Exhaust will need to clear steering rack (may have to be a pretty constrictive bend). When mocking engine your trying to get the driveshaft as level as possible, up and down and side to side (I'm sure ya knew that) If your planning on using the s10 cluster the speedo cable will need to be modified. You can do this by taking the plastic gear (tranny side) from the skyline and putting it on s10 cable or other modification can work as well. Skyline cluster will work after some wire splicing of course. Next is engine mounts, My friend just welded his mounts directly to a beefed up part of the engine bay lol. My plan however is to make rubber mounts. Here is a link on how to do that if your interested. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/mak...heres-how.html

Your "Canada" location wasn't very specific so I assumed Ontario too bad. Purolator Freight is really expensive with these heavy items.

Yeah, i was looking to weld some brackets on and to use the s10 cluster. As for the exhaust i have a buddy at a break and muffler shop who said he could make something up for me. Hmm well i think it would be a very neat project and if i managed to get everything working properly it would be a very fast little truck. Just gotta look into prices a bit more and try to get an estimate for total cost to see if i can afford to do this right now.

yeah i figured freight would cost a lot, and im on the other side of Canada, just north of Kamloops. so it would cost even more.

Why RB20DET? I mean KA24 were built as truck motors and seem like a way more practical route. Great performance gains at a much cheaper price and probably way less difficult to install. If needed, the Nissan Frontier/Hardbody Pickup rear suspension setup would be a better fit (basically need less customized fabrication.) Which also leads to cheaper suspension options.

I would do the RB20DET over the KA24 anyday for this type of project. If it's meant to be a small project and both motors are going to stay stock, I'd rather have a fun little high revving, already boosted power capable RB20.

In that case, it'd be better to just get a CA18, SR20 or RB25.
