  • More update: I decided to get a new head instead of messing around with that one. I'm buying a head + cams + cam gears all assembled from a member here.

Kinda sad because I had a good chunk of money invested in that one (mostly from the machine work) but in the end having a trouble-free head with bigger cams is gonna be totally worth it.

        • I really suggest getting a heater. I have a forced air furnacein my garage. Warms it up really good. Too bad it's not as clean as your garage god dammit. That I almost my dream garage except I will have a hoist. Big garage, white gtr, my dream... And it's awesome working on your gtr on the winter!!

          • I looked into getting a hoist but i don't have enough ceiling space.

As for the heater, I have a forced air furnace but oil is so damn expensive I just don't bother. Plus I wouldn't feel comfortable assembling an engine in colder temperatures with the metal shrinking and then expanding.

Might be wrong though. Oh well, I have a whole bunch of other projects before I get back to the car next summer. Thanks for the comments though !

            • Is this build ever gonna end???

We had a couple of warm days lately...

So a leakdown test on the new head revealed a valve job was needed. Head came off:

Then to the machine shop...and back:

I was going for a valve lap and I ended up with a 4 angle on both sides :P

Cams went back on and now I'm re-shimming. Again. I took the tomei cam studs from the other head and put them on this one. I'll know which shims to order by next week. After that it should be final assembly time. Cross fingers !

                • Update: head is shimmed. Everything should be good to go. Final assembly starts tomorrow!

But I sent my engine covers to get powdercoated...hopefully they'll be back soon.

                  • Update.

The car is running. However the back turbo (which I rebuilt) is burning oil...or so it seems. I still have to let it completely warm up though so we will see.

Worst case scenario is another turbo rebuild. Sucks but no big deal. Video to come.

                    • Update: the car was running pretty smooth but that rear turbo needs another rebuilt.

The oil burning was substantially better and probably would have completely stopped after a couple of hours of driving.

At idle everything was fine but when I increased the revs to 3k for a couple of seconds and close the throttle again, I could hear what seemed like a wheel rubbing on the housing. It only lasts about half a second.

So I pulled the turbo out and took it apart and there's no sign of shaft play. So maybe it's a balance thing? I did mark everything when I rebuilt it....whatever. The exhaust wheel shows some signs of rubbing. So I went ahead and bought a new one :P

Should be back on the road by next weekend.
