    • Sticking up for you? bah I wasn't hating, just questioning. My bad.

So the 2860R-9s are the Disco potatoes? Just out of curiousity, the -9 are simply -5s with Larger turbine housings? (.86) or is the -5 with .86 different than the -9 with .86? They seem to have the same everything else. I'm still on the fence about which turbos so I'm asking all the dumb questions.

      • I thought the disco potatoes were -10's either way i wouldn't go bigger then -5's anyways unless your going for a stroker kit or a rb30 ive just read a lot about -10's being laggy otherwise... with the proper mods you can get a lot outta the -5's and they respond way better...

The -5's have a larger compressor wheel than the -9's

The "Disco Potato" turbo is the GT2860RS, which is the same compressor and turbine wheels as the GT2860R-5, only with different non-GTR style housings. You could run them on a GTR, but the gains over the -5's would be minimal, if there are even any gains. You'd require all new charge piping, as well as new dumps and downpipes.

The -10's are a GT2871R, which shares the same turbine wheel as the GT2860R-5's, but with a significantly larger compressor wheel.

I'm still not convinced on the whole way too laggy thing with the 10's, I'm getting boost on at 3500-3800 which I dont think is bad. What's so hard about with a quick downshift if needed?? Had a rip in GTR Dad's car, he is running 2860's like yourself Curtis. Very very quick spool great track course car set up.

            • That sounds like not to much lag im just going on what ive heard and read. I guess it all depends on what rpm you want boost at max, what boost you wanna run and what you want your car to behave like on the road/track. the setup i have running could be considered a bit laggy as well... i start spooling a 3k rpm but dont get 1.8 bar till late in the 4k rpm range... if i change the stock boost piping for hard pipes i might get that a bit earlier though (TBA).

              • The bigger the turbo, the bigger the lag. But of course how laggy a car is is somewhat subjective!

There is a lot you can do to reduce lag with bigger turbos though, such as leaning the A/F and adding timing pre-boost, and eliminating any intake or exhaust restrictions, such as using a bigger IC, bigger IC piping, high flow filters with a good suction kit, big turbo elbows and down pipes, and a good test pipe. Bigger displacement, over-size valves and port work will also help.

Another great lag reducer is NOS! You can have it run at low-RPM, and then cut out as the boost comes on.

                • What kind of compression did you end up with? Low 8s? How bout your tune, what kinda of AFRs are you running throughout the powerband?
