  • HKS vcam info?

Does anyone have any feedback on the v-cam system. Good/bad.. More specifically the step pro version. Thanks.

I hear its an awesome system, but never made it into full production due to costs.

On the contrary the standard and Pro versions are available...they just don't do much in the way of advertising them. They are expensive as hell, not that easy to tune, and may require relief cuts on your piston's intake side for some pistons.

It is the one thing that was on my "to do" list for my build this year that I didn't go through with. After seeing the price and complexity, decided against it and just went with a milder cam setup (270degree 10.8mm lift) than I originally wanted to.

It is a good chunk of change, around 4000 for the system plus it adds to the complexity of tuning. I could think of better things to spend 4K on, like an OS Giken gearset, or new front/rear diffs, etc.

That's the price for the standard system. The Pro setup is about US$5000~5500...very expensive for what you are getting.

The HKS & HKS Kansai sites still advertise the Step Pro:

WOW...with the Yen rate these days the Step Pro is actually about US$6000 for just the parts, good luck finding someone to tune it and spending another US$800-1000 to get that done. That money would go a lot farther towards your engine or the body of your GTR.

That is pretty absurd. I'm going to be about $6000 into my entire build - forged motor, new turbo, and clutch rebuild.

Thanks guys. This is the final leg of the build. Im running hks 2.8 step 2 on an n1 block. At this point there is little left to do. I know the unit will cost some bucks but im thinking the gains will out way it. Any first hand user information would be most valuable. Thanx again.

Never had any first hand experience but I did see a video of Tsuchia driving it without the cam engaged then with it functioning and the car had a way broader and smoother power band.

Some people on GTROC have been using it with decent success.

I think that for the gains that a V-cam will net you, it would have been much easier to run an RB30. You'd probably see even bigger mid range gains, and much less cost. It'd probably have been cheaper than your 2.8 stroker, actually.

In retrospect, the RB30 may have been at a better cost in the end. And with some very nice power numbers. I have always thought about the rb30 but have been to much of a traditionalist..Its gonna have to wait till i throw a piston through a cylinder i think.

Yeah, either way you look at it though I don't believe the gains from the V-cam are worthy of the cost.
