I'll be in montreal not next weekend but the other one (the 28-29). Tell me if you still need mafs by then.

By the way check in the engine manual. Not the service manual, the engine manual.

If has the whole troubleshooting sequence depending on the symptoms and diagnostic 27 on page en-458 really looks like your case.

To me it sounds like a faulty fuel pump working some days and not others =\

it is on the drivers side inner fender just behind where (if you have one) the strut tower bar would be. shiney little bugger with a 90 degree elbow on the top.

and yes it smells rich when it is dying.

not quite like that, i'd have to turn my idle up to about 3000rpm, not happening.

i think i was testing my ignitor properly and that is the problem. (fingers crossed, i'm going out to the garage to do more diagnosing in a minute)

on a more positive note, i also did a compression test (wich i've been avoiding way too long) 1-6= 145-147-145-148-146-139 (dry compression)

I'm going to suggest clogged/dirty throttle body/bodies. How do the plugs look (I might have missed that above)? Do you have a wideband installed? How's the charging system running? Good grounds, battery terminal connections?? Man these cars are finicky

have you tried two different mafs?
have you leak tested the system?
                        pulled a code?
                        tested another set of coils?
                        loose ecu loom?
                        TPS voltage?

havn't tried mafs... need to find a pair
how do i check for codes?
havn't tried other coils but mine all have 1ohm resistance equally across all 6
                          all the connections seem fine
what kind of voltage should i be seing off of the TPS?

TPS ~0.5V when closed, at Idle...

thanks anthony, what makes you suspect my throttle bodies? i've decided to pull my plenum off to clean out my hicas junk and to get it powdercoated so i will see but i've never heard of that on these cars. and to answer your question, the plugs looked pretty good, charging system is pretty good (same conditions after putting a charger on) and the grounds are all good. no wideband yet but when i am able to keep in running (~2800rpm and up before it dies) it smells pig rich.

Just grabbing straws. I was thinking old fashioned for a bit there (just read through a lesson on carbs..). The balance tube should nullify where I was going with it...

                                What's the timing like?

It certainly sounds ignition related. When it did idle, what was the voltage like?
