The thing about tps controlled mapping is that there is no real compensation for changing load values ie: pulling up a hill where more throttle is needed at the at the same rpm that might be used for just cruising speed on flat ground. So ultimately to be safe it needs to be tuned on the rich side.
I could be mistaken but this all made sense coming from the tuner.
I'm not a tuner and don't think I will ever have the patients/courage to attempt tuning so take this info with a grain of salt.
Cheers

Thx for all these answer , i'll do some more research on the Vipec and the Haltech . I need to compare the price too . No i wont take a cheap ECU to save money but im pretty sure that the AEM Haltech and Vipec will do the job if its tuned properly . I'll try to find wich one offer the best combo/price. I dont have my A/f gauge , boost gauge etc yet so im trying to find a great ECU/Gauge/Sensor deal that match with each other . If one of you know somebody or saw a trhread about selling a good ECU let me know !
Another question , im in the area of Montreal Quebec . Who know a good tuner that did some map for a 500hp+ GTR single turbo with Map sensor .

ECU that you use depends on application (street, drag, racetrack, etc).
Stock ECU has knock control, 16 x 16 maps. Very basic ECU, but works with stock or close to engine configuration with stock revlimiters, etc. It's designed to make engine last (reliability).
Link, ViPEC ECU (20 x 20 maps) because they have barometric (altitude), IAT (intake temp) compensation and can run a ROSS crank trigger setup if necessary (to replace CAS and get accurate ignition timing on high hp engines). Barometric compensation can be an option (including sensor) on some ECU's. Knock control is an option via fitting knock block. Not ideal for high reving dragracing engines, but can be used on street or track cars.
If highend drag engine, etc, Motec ECU (40 x 20 maps) because it can do what Link, ViPEC ECU's can do and has more rpm rows (40rpm rows vs 20rpm rows on Link, ViPEC, PowerFC, etc, 16 rpm rows on stock ECU) and has Motec ignition, coilpack upgrade option, datalog shock travel, driveshaft rpm (to tune clutch), etc. More rpm rows = more control over shape of power, torque curves or can rev engine higher than stock rev limit's. These options, features is why it's used on the engines of the fastest imports on the planet and on racecars, etc.

In the end, ecu topics are pretty much just fanboy bs. except anything you hear about power fc is probably true. that thing is ancient! Talk to your tuner and ask him what he wants to tune your setup with. There's no point in spending $1500+ just for your tuner to ignore all the extra options that available in the ecu you bought.
Seems that alot of tuners are arrogant about tuning something they don't know very well. Seems like they don't want to expand their knowledge base. You should use that as a tool for picking the right tuner.
I dunno. Good luck?

if u are good tuner, than u will make RB work even on Megasquirt. There are tons of 500-700hp 1/4 projects working with lo budget SA ECU and they are doing 9s with just few options like LC,NO2 controler etc...I have 2lt opel kadett 500whp on Megasquirt (200$ with inovate WB02) and can do 1000cc on 0.2 sec at idle for 15AFR and did WOT 280kmh passes on autobahn many many times...
as for here, think that VIPEC is way to go for SA...but if all that is DIY,there are many cheaper options there

I have nothing bad to say about haltech however AEM did nearly cost me my engine
When the meth controller decided to pump 4 liters of spray into my intercooler while the engine was not running.
Not impressed at all.
I had my reserves about AEM when more than one tuner expressed dislike and even called it
" Almost an Engine Management "Favorites

Really it boils down to "what are you using the car for". If all you are doing is a street car that can shock and awe on occation then a D-Jetro with DataLogit is hard to beat. Sure the fancy pants ECUs have more features but, do you really need them. Especially at two to three times the price.
If you are a hardcore racer and need the incredibly precise control that the fancy pants ECUs can give you (because you race in a class that only allows 2 fuel stops and you have tuned the motor to within an inch of it's life to make it to the end on the fuel aloted) then spend the money.
A Djetro can SAFELY handle 1000whp all day long.

I am using an AEM V1 with throttle based MAP compensated setup. I agree that AEM EMS is very complicate to tune. But, once everything was figured out, it is a very capable and reliable EMS.
However, if your tuner is not comfortable with AEM EMS, then do not buy AEM EMS.Last edited by xcye; 12-18-2012, 02:05 PM.

I like the Power FC L Jetro. MAF is the way to go. D Jetro works well too, but I personally think MAF sampling is more accurate than MAP database calculations. Eric Hsu also thinks the Power FC L Jetro works great, prefers using it for street driven cars.
That being said, my silver car has an AEM v1 with MAP. It is what it is, it works, not that thrilled about it, but I'm not buying something else just for the sake of not using a working AEM EMS.Nick
