  • Choosing the BEST BOV for a GTR

    HI,

i am sure this is on here somewhere, but i am looking for the specifics what BOV works the best with the recirculation issues etc...

The post above is great about installing them but the guy unfortuatley has no motor so we dont know how well they run........

GTR-J have you had any problems with water or stalling of any kind?

Thanks for the info and pics helped out a great deal

For example what he said but looking for an answer haha...

    HKS SSQ
    Forge
    GReddy type s or RS..

What works best what are people running?

thanks my car is a 91 GTR for the record

Alrighty then... I also have the SSQV's. I think they rock. I get an occasional >pop!< but I'm told that's normal with atmospheric bov's on a Skyline. I've had no stalling, or water ingestion issues, but HKS makes an ignition module designed to go with these bov's, that should fix any stalling problems that might occur.

I can't really see them sucking up water(if that's what was meant), as they're releasing pressurized hot air.... Mine's a year round daily driver, as well (gotta love BC's excuse for winter!!!) so it's seen some damn heavy rain....

    Hope this helps

so are you running them open without tuning??...or does the module trick the ecu into thinking the BOVs are recirculating...and how do the twin HKS' sound??...do they go off at the same time or on their?....im in the same boat as nissanconvert...

      thanks, Nav 8)

HKS SSQV are loud and ricey. Come to think of it, almost all bov's are. So i bought a greddy type R, but thats not really an option on a stock turbo'd gtr.......blitz seem to be some of the less annoying ones.....

I don't think mine sound too ricey... Although mine have the supposedly "quiet" purple inserts (they are the quietest ones available from HKS), and the hole in the bumper is blocked by my license plate.

          Alright... They're a bit ricey. >Busted!!<

I had the Blitz DD's for a while, I actually liked the sound they made better, it was a lot less noticable.

I wasn't aware you had to re-tune your engine for atmospheric bov's.... Someone help me out on this before I potentially roast something!! Mine came with the Blitz DD's on it, so perhaps the tuning was done before I got the car, but as long as you plug the recirc tube, I would think it wouldn't matter. I've never read of anyone having to re-tune their car for bov's, maybe someone can back me up (right or wrong!)

My SSQV's might pop at slightly different times, but it's almost impossible to tell. The blitz's were a little more obviously out of sync... Not too sure why, tho.

The module (the EIDS, I think) prevents stalling, I'm told. I took mine for a drive after I put the bov's in, and had no stalling issues at all, but went back to the shop to put in the module anyway, as it came in the box with my bov's. Better (and cheaper) safe than sorry.

what are stock BOV's? I have a HKS ssq in my GTS-t but in my GTR i have stock. does anyone know how stock GTR's bov's work(ie re-circ, ssq, atmospheric pressure??)

              thanks!

the car is a 1990 GTR

i had the hks bov on my gtr ,it sound good but you had to turn your ecu to work with it . the stock gtr don't have a bov it had a by pass v.

its funny, the stock tuning on the GTR doesnt accomedate for the recirculated air from the stock bypass-valve.

the air gets thrown back into the intake AFTER the MAF, so this air is un-metered. so if youre doing some serious engine braking, or fluttering your throttle, youre going to run very lean with the stocker.

but theres nothing wrong with that at stock boost.. but at 1bar, if you close the throttle at 8000rpm, thats alot of extra air.

alot of GTR owners came from owning WRXs... the WRX ecu tries to accomedate for the bypassed air, so a BOV denies the engine that air, so it runs rich when you chirp it (fireball!).

so do we have any agreement on what BOV to go with?

And what we have to do to get the GTR to run beutifully with aftermarket bov's?

nobodys going to agree on anything, just use whatever you want..

i have an HKS ssq, it came on the car when i got it. im running 13psi of boost, so it sounds like a banshee when i close throttle at peak boost under a bridge

IMO, nothing is really needed to prep the car for the BOV.

thanks. I think this is the first actual helpful post yet that gives anyone an idea on that is required to run a BOV.

what are the "least noisy" bov's? I have a HKS(on my GTS-t) right now but it is super loud and i think that i want to just get some really good low noise bov's...

Is there any suggestions of what are the loudest and the quietest BOV's

mabey just a list form loud to quiet thanks!
