  • Manny's '91 GTSexy-T Project

I bought myself a '91 GTS-T rb20det as a 2008 Christmas present and replacement car in December, and it's time to start working on it. Compression was bad in a few cylinders, leaks all over the place, a rattle from the power steering pump...so everything's coming out. Here's what I've got so far, I'll be updating it frequently since I'm just starting the engine rebuild. Feel free to let me know if you see any potential problems or parts I should consider replacing:

Here's my baby (Lucy). She needs some TLC but nothing that can't be made perfect

    Just after the compression test:

    There's my little turbo!

Turbo coming out, this is the first time I've actually seen it. I thought it'd be a bit bigger, might get a new one. Look at that nasty power steering leak. Gross.

The exhaust wheel looks a bit worn but not too awful. Correction: Thrust bearing is shot. Crap.

Why the heck is there a Mitsubishi logo on the front of my cam?

That's all for now! Power steering pump will come out in the next couple days.

    Update:
Got the leaky hoses off the power steering reservoir and pushed the pump out of the way.
Took off the exhaust manifold and found some problems: Gasket is broken and cooked, and the manifold and block are black from the bad seal.

Most disturbing, the bolts came off the manifold so easily a 10 year old could have twisted them off with a small wrench. They are also worryingly short-threaded. Do your manifold bolts look like these pics or are mine just wrong?

Fan and radiator are out, stupid fan pulley bolts wouldnt loosen because the pulley kept turning but i prevailed in the end.

And after alot of reaching in awkward places and scraping of the arms, the top half of my intake manifold was removed, with the exception of the throttle cable (trying to avoid removing that if possible since i can just push this out of the way)

Okay, after a few more hours of getting crap out of the way I'm at this point right hurr...

LOOK HOW DIRTY THIS THING IS! Definitely time for cleaning and new seals.

    Charly's helping out apparently.

And this is how the engine bay looks as of today.

A/C needs to be unbolted from the engine block, and a few more wires and hoses need to come off but it's almost ready! Thinking black edges fading into white for the engine bay paint job.

Just got my new dead pedal in the mail today, courtesy of EliteGTR. Thanks dude!

Engine's coming out today! I hope...Anyways, car's up on jack stands, engine oil's all gone, about to do the tranny oil. Electrical connections are off the tranny, shifter's out. Here's where I sit at the moment.

Engine's out! Thats a damn big fish!

And after a day of clean-up, it's time to start tearing the engine down. Here's what we got done over a few hours today. Tranny taken off and set aside, clutch and flywheel off, head is off, pistons out, crank is still in. cant find the socket i need to get the crank pulley off. AND THERE ARE PROBLEMS! 2 of the cylinder walls have some bumps in the middle which you can actually see just looking down the cylinder. Cylinder 6 piston looks kinda cooked. Once it's all down, it's time to send the block to be dunked, cleaned, and checked for any cracks. Looks like it's going to need to be rebored and get new pistons! boy howdy.

After a few days spent with my lady it's time to get back to the car. Took out the cams today, a couple of the bolts holding down the cam brackets were a bit iffy. a few of them don't come out of the bracket, they seem to be unscrewing INTO the bracket itself. Taking the valves out tomorrow, and maybe the crank if I've got time before work. Check this out, one of my exhaust valves is COOOOOKED. Here's a pic of the normal valves, and then of the valves on cylinder 3 or 4 (don't remember which it was). Any thoughts on what might cause this?

Got some parts degreased today, definitely need to sand and polish

Did some more work today. Finally got the crank out, but since the timing gear wouldn't come off i had to drill the oil pump off. Hillbilly solutions to the rescue!

Well the engine's entirely apart, ready to send the block off to get dunked, cleaned, and checked for any cracks or internal structural problems. There's engine pieces lying all over the floor, under the car, in the trunk, but I've managed not to take up the other half of the garage.

I tried sanding a few parts down to get all shiny and ready to polish but failed lol

Trunk's filled in and primered, ready for paint!

Bought a power sander today, reeeeeally helped get the rest of that powder coat crap off my cam covers. It's also made prepping my engine bay for painting a heck of a lot easier.

Special order engine paint came in today! Sexy hot rod electric blue...

Here we go, got my strut bar in a couple days ago, just test fitted it and it should work!

Hopefully all these colors won't look too bad when it's all together, otherwise the strut bar might have to get painted.
I've been brushing my teeth with jack but it's resulted in terrible amounts of tooth decay.

    Good stuff.

There are a few places you'll find Mitsubishis logo. Nissan outsourced some part manufacturing I suppose.

My old CAS didn't, my new CAS does.

        As I said before, outsourcing.

CAS for R32, R33 by Mitsubishi but bearings inside are made by NTN in Japan and is said to be the most reliable CAS on RB motor. BOV is made by Mitsubishi. R32 Engine ECU by Hitachi. Nissan brakes by Sumitamo. Hub bearings, wheel bearings by Nachi in Japan. Some say stock turbo is made by Hitachi.

How many engine mounts are there? I'm not sure how much stuff I'm going to need to remove to be able to get at each one, do most of you clear out your bay completely before taking the engine out?

Gearbox mount on rear of transmission and one mount on each side of engine. About 3 in total.

A good upgrade in S13, S14, S15, R32, etc, is to use a HPI or similar engine torque damper that stops engine rocking on the engine mounts which causes misshift's -

The downside to using a engine damper is more NVH (Noise Vibration Harness) on I think was strut tower. It's easier to upgrade engine mounts to Nismo engine mounts while engine is out.

I would replace water hoses under intake manifold, behind engine (known to leak) and anything else like thermostat, welsh plugs on front and rear of engine, under exhaust manifold that's hard to get at. Replace all the seals on engine and any rubber hoses.

damn, sorry to hear about the low numbers, engine was pulling strong last year. I'm glad your taking care of this car, happy I didn't sold it to a 16yo who would have beaten the **** out of it !
Post some pics of the car the way it's sitting right now !

haha yeah ive seen a couple people not label anything and hook things up backwards and even upside down. there's so many connections on this car! even with everything labeled i'm nervous about hooking it all back up when everything's done, but it'll all work out.
don't worry Max, i'll take good care of her. 160,000km is a good time to rebuild the engine, and now hopefully she'll be ready for racing in July. Thanks for this gorgeous machine! I'm glad you didn't sell it to the 16 year old too, such a sexy car haha.
Power steering belt is off now and the pump is about to come off. I'll keep updating this week.

aights, finally got around to taking the power steering pump bracket off the engine so now I just need to disconnect a couple lines off the pump so i can push it out of the way completely.
                      Question:
are these lines running back into the power steering reservoir both return lines?

aaaand what are these 2 lines off the power steering pump going to? are they both just feeding fluid to the steering box or is there a difference in the 2?

Let me know if you've got an idea why there's 2 lines on the pump and reservoir instead of just 1, thanks! The big hose you can sorta see in the second pic is the transfer line from the reservoir to the pump (I believe) so the extra hoses aren't those.

Those lines head to the power steering cooler before they go to the hicas pump.

As funny as it is, it looks like there is a million lines everywhere but really there isn't very many at all. I could tell you where all those lines go.
