  • Waiting on my oil cooler / relocation setup from Brianv8. Have had nothing but good things to say about the Godspeed products he has been offering thus far, so i'll be throwing their oil cooler kit on my car as well.

    As most of you have probably guessed by now, i'm not brand specific. I don't care that it's made by a company who's using a similar idea as another (setrab or even greddy..). What means most is that its 1/16th the price, and yet, remains as efficient as any other product offered by any other company.

    My design premise was based on a budget replication of the HR31's used in the Group A touring car series. A 460 hp car is a little exaggerated here, but my hopes of 360 to 400 hp made efficiently and cost effectively is far from an exaggeration.

    Skym praises the Gibson built HR and i can totally relate. It's a stock bottom end with cosworth pistons/rings, head gasket, head work, larger turbo and intercooler and a phenomenal tune (in short) producing hp a rb26 rarely sees.

    Of course hg/valve springs/timing belts and the works will be where i lower my guard to brand names. I've been learning throughout my build process that there are places you can cheap out, and places you cannot. And these are certainly places i want reputable companies backing me up in the case of any catastrophic events.. Injectors were my low point - but we learn from our mistakes..

    I think this should go to anyone - i mean, because you have greddy grex oil cooler kit doesn't mean your car is any better equipped than the next guy. Of course it sounds epic as a t1ts to have one, it isnt a necessity. Save some cash and build yourself a fun car without being leary of no name products; they're just in the midst of building a reputable name, be part of the bandwagon!

    Just for those of you interested (and this is just for comparative purposes!).. My total to this day, including ALL the parts, OIL changes, Windshield replacement, fender and hood repair (guy backing into me), my tune, tires - literally everything i've put into the car in terms of modifications and replacement parts; totals just over 7,000$... When comparing retail prices to the prices i paid for everything new and used, and in comparison to items i WOULD have used, such as a Greddy oil cooler and HKS intercooler and etc, would have totalled me just below 15,000$.. Saving 8k on a car that makes me equally as happy as it would have in either case is priceless in my opinion..

          • It's not so much the brand, it's how the oilcooler is made to withstand racing conditions. Should see my mates GTR racecar (ex N1 racecar) to see what I mean, as his car uses the best products from Japan and is reliable when thrashed. Engine oilcooler core looks like a Setrab oilcooler core.

            The GTS-R in Europe had around 400hp at engine as was still competitive -

            The GTS-R in above link is part of Nissan's racecar collection in Japan. There's basic specs including hp it produced on Nissan Japan website.

            Gibson GTS-R had around 442hp (engine) at 1.7bar. Stock GTS-R is around 22psi for similar amount of hp at engine (higher compression) when using basic boost up menu.

            • Ok coming off a discussion not long ago about weight savings, ive dug up some of my notes that were actually here on my computer, turns out i was wrong about the stock weight, in fact my car in stock form was 1,280 kg - not 1,320 that i previously mentioned.. So 160kg loss.

              I'll put the calculations and all the 'pieces removed' when this winter is over as i have a bunch more to do before next season.

              Also, i'll be installing my oil cooler this weekend.. temps are going below zero at night, so im a bit hesitant, but dammit i wanna do something productive.. lol

                • Absolute!
                  Should have pics up late late tonight

                  I got my GTSR badge in from Australia too! (Eastbear GTSR badge)

                  Excited to get this oil cooler on, heading to work now to be 'productive' hah.

                  I've also decided on mounting the cooler Vertically, Reasoning;
                  1. Oil entrance on the bottom, oil feed back to block on top; restricts it from emptying on shut down (need to research this more thoroughly)
                  2. Keeps from trapping air like it would, having the entrance/exit on the bottom
                  3. keeps from containing old oil on oil changes as you would see from the entrance/exit on the top

                  Going to be mounting it to the rebar or maybe the roof of the battery tray on the drivers side.. Purposely bought my same-sided IC for this reason.. front end will finally be filled...

                  • Sooo vertical mounting failed, not enough room. Its simply horizontal, entrances up. Fills my entire driver side lower valence and looks effin bad assss. I left it on a slight angle in the event of rocks; should hopefully just glance off now..

                    Another issue... The 3/4-16unf fitting for the universal kit didn't fit the filter. Thread pitch was slightly different, so now I'm searching for a piece at home depot (plumbing fittings are 3/4), if that fails, simply get a larger dye.

                    All lines are in! I did a little something to keep my engine bay cleaner as the temp/press sender bungs are on the relocation, I didn't want clutter, so I kept my existing sandwich plate on the block and mounted the sender/return plate for the kit atop that. Should have zero issues and keeps me from having to reroute the wiring for my senders..

                    The kit has plenty of available line, a little much for the driver side but not enough for the passenger side, or just enough but the lines will be taught.

                        I knowwww I'm dwelling hard!

                        Ok ok heres what i have so FAR

                        Note, i dont have engine bay shots YET because my engine bay is dirty and it began to rain, and the rain contrasts with the colour of my engine bay and makes it ugly.. Yepppp

                        I'll post one tomorrow when its relatively nice (aka snowing.. FOKKK YOUUUUUUU MONTREAL)

                        Kit;

                        GTSR Badge;

                        Questionable carbon fibre placemats??? I think not.. lol

                        The depths - headlight removed.

                        Cooler placement;

                        Before;

                        HEHROOOO CHINAAA

                        Yes, these are 2 different DIAMETERS and thread pitches.. MMM tastefully done.

                        Ok so snag one.. Off to machinist.

                        BAM;

                        Longer? Yes.. Made it identical length-out of the original oil adapter plate on the block i have sitting in my shop.

                        Moving along....

                        Cheesey steel brackets i fashioned. Nice and solid. Piece of thick foam between the rebar and the top row to provide a little more cushioning, but not really needed...

                        My a$$.. I wish

                        Rest went okay.

                        My review of this product;

                        Godspeed universal oilcooler/relocation kit.

                        PROS;

                        -Plenty of line, like 10 feet or something return.. Can manage maybe, front grill.. Passenger side may be tight but i think its probably still do able.
                        -Fittings are genuine top cheese. They're nice, and actually aren't cheap.. Neither are the steel braided lines.. Good to know.. lol
                        -Remote and sender plates are well machined aluminium. Light and nice looking.. They're pretty cool..
                        -Works.. It's like 8 degress out.. i cant get my car over 140f, poo.

                        CONS;

                        -Obvious flaw in the effin thread pitch for the filter carrier
                        -They didnt tap the temp/pressure sender holes 1/8th NPT.. they're something funky like that effin filter carrier lol. Honestly i have no clue wtf they are.. I literally took 2 blank off bolts that were 1/8th npt and gave er.. F*ck it.. lol I'll re-tap them this winter.
                        -AN fittings are ALUMINUM. Ok i guess it's light and saves cost but the effin thing broke so i had to source a new one. Of course its a -10 to a -6.. Good luck finding that on a saturday.. Honestly. But yea, i over tightened it and it snapped. Best would be to use genuine steel pressure fittings from earls or source them from your autoparts. They're like 4$ each.. I would suggest replacing them. Aluminum is not good for this.

                        So yea, i mean its good.. If i had any notion of this beforehand i would have built my own kit.. But if you're looking for a kit that offers quite a bit and works, this is a good choice.

                        I'll be contacting godspeed this week about their strange thread pitch issue, hopefully it will be resolved for future purchase.
                        However, after saying that, i was even thinking maybe it was made for a different filter? I tried a ton of ISO/JIC filters, nothing seemed to work.. i only assumed it was wrong.. Anyways, wtv.. Now it fits my nice orange fram filter so i dont care lol

                        Pics of engine bay to come (weather permitting; cuz of the rain making it look ugly.....?)

                        Oh and my badge looks nice! lol
