  • Problems with N1 oil pumps?

I have heard that the N1 oil pumps have a tendency to fail? Thoughts? Arguments? Let me know what you know.

The only time I've heard about N1 pump failures, is when engine is reved higher than normal or bounces of the rev limiter. Most fit a JUN oilpump or learn the lessons the hard, expensive way with drag motors and dump the wetsump setup and run a drysump setup.

I would never recommend the N1 to any person building a motor. A Tomei oil pump is CHEAP insurance! Even if you don't rev to 8000rpm or hit the rev limiter its the shear fact that it can break and does very easily. Most aftermarket pumps do not have this problem.

Here is a few threads I found in under 10 minutes.

hey guys hjust wondering if a s13diff VlSD style will work in my GTS-T??? and if so what will be the other mods to get it in there??

Hi were can i get the best price for some bearings conrod and main and a oil pump in UK ? Dont know if this er the right forum to post this post. so sorry if wrong :p

Just a few more bits to get for the rebuild - Is the Nismo oil pump any good compared to the HKS or Tomei one? Thanks for any help

Tomei Oil Pump - see how its designed totally different. Much larger gears and nearly bulletproof.

^ +1. N1 pumps are prone to breaking just as much as the stock pumps are at high RPM. If you're building a forged engine or using the car for track, there's really no use skimping out on an oil pump, sure it may cost you over $1000, but what would you rather spend; $1000 on a new oil pump or who knows how much fixing your seized pistons, head, etc.? My philosophy is that if you're going to do it, do it right the first time around. Like Braden said, it's CHEAP insurance compared to what it'd cost to rebuild your entire engine.

**Just a little note, I've heard to stay away from the GReddy pumps as the gear inside their units is more prone to failure than any other non-nissan aftermarket pump.

If you can't afford a new oil pump you can't afford the engine build in the first place. You hit it on the nose.

The N1s are very similar to the stock pumps. They are even nearly the same price. Some people buy N1 pumps thinking that they can rev way over the red line and be just fine. Well unfortunately that is not true.

Is the N1 pump stronger than the stock pump? No, it is pretty much the same.
Is the N1 pump more suited to higher rpm driving below the stock red line? Yes.
Are you looking for an oil pump to replace your current stock unit, that will handle pretty much everything you can throw at it below the red line and under say...500hp? The N1 is for you.
Same goes for the N1 water pump.

If you want a high quality oil pump that is capable of handling higher rpms and horsepower, there are 4 aftermarket choices:

                Tomei: retail 144,900 JPY
                HKS: retail 175,350 JPY
                Jun: retail 102,900 JPY
                Nismo: retail 100,800 JPY

The N1 pumps use a smaller gear set and thinner material. I have measured them both (N1=77mm vs OEM=82mm or soemthing like that, can't remember off hand)

Want a decent pump 'on the cheap' and can't afford a $1,000 pump ?

BUY an OEM Pump and shim the relief spring with a single washer (to increase pressure a bit). Locktite the backplate fasteners......DONE AND DONE.

GReddy pumps and JUN are the exact same... Been told by many sources they are made in the same factory and Greddy puts a blue backing plate on there's, where JUN engraves there logo.

It's no secret that the housings are cast in the same place, as you can see that they are the same externally from the bolt pattern on the rear of the pump.
Also, Greddy uses a Blue cap on it's relief and Jun use a Red cap to help further tell them apart physically on face value alone.

I doubt however that the gear sets are the same.

Based on price alone, I would say that the Jun pump is more widely used....yet the more expensive Greddy/Trust has far more failure stories to it's name.

Lets keep rumours in check if there are no facts. There is so much misinformation floating around the internet about who makes whose parts. The worst one is that Tomei makes all of Juns parts, which is completely not true.
So unless facts are posted, lets not fuel this fire again.

Doesn't Cosworth make some JUN products?

Anyway, point of this story is... don't buy a N1 pump

Cosworth makes one of the three types of Jun pistons.
