Series 1 R32 coilpack is spring + metal piece on end of spring

Series 2 R32 coilpack is spring only

I have both series coilpacks on my cars engine.

That's one way to find out if your car is a series 1 or 2 R32. I.D code on front of turbo compressor housing is another.

Nissan only sell Series 2 coilpacks, as that is what they gave me. I asked about if there was something wrong with coilpack, the Series 1, 2 mentioned above is what they told me.

Yeah that makes alot more sense. I thought that i found the source of the hesitation. Do you know where i can get a NEW steering rack without having to pay $1200 for a new one from the dealership? Is it bad to replace the one i have that is leaking with on that is used?

i dont thinks so cause im sure a used unit wont leak it may in a few years but still cheaper haha.
i never knew there was 2 series for RB20det, or is it the redtop and silvertop versions?

You can rebuild the steering rack. But from memory it isn't cheap if you get a powersteering specialist to do it. Best to find a good second hand steering rack from a scrap yard if you don't want to spend alot of $$$.

              Redtop RB20DET is R31, and from memory a Z model had a redtop RB20DET.

Silvertop RB20DET was R32 and had Series 1, Series 2.

On Redtop RB20DET, turbo size, cams, restricted intake manfold. R32 RB20DET was the better engine due to non restrictive intake manifold, bigger turbo (GTS model, not GTS-R), etc and is often used as an upgrade in R31 engine bays.

Whistling at around 5000rpm can be exhaust leak between exhaust manifold, turbo. It's common for the nuts to undo themselves if the locking tabs are not bent up to stop the nuts rotating due to vibration (or studs might have stretched) . Or it might have blown the gasket or gasket is leaking. I think (can't remember 100%, as I haven't looked at the gasket in ages) it's one of those exhaust gaskets (between turbo, exhaust manifold) that has a ridge seal and once vibration untightens the nuts, the exhaust gasket can leak or be destroyed. If you tighten turbo back down onto exhaust manifold with a non destroyed exhaust gasket, the exhaust gasket leaks at ridge seal. I think it's a use once only type of gasket.

Worst case, could be ceramic exhaust wheel touching exhaust housing. Pulling exhaust (dump pipe) off back of turbo and wiggling exhaust wheel to check shaft play will tell you how bad it is. Should spin freely, not bind against housing and have minimal play.

                      oh okay.
i definatley dont have any airleaks, checked the hose before the turbo also, no boost leak or anything.
its not like a high pitched whistle, just is loudr than the others i heard, mine also came with different colipacks and all the sensor plugs were different minus the injectors, temp sending unit.
the injectors also had yellow on the inside instead of ared cap :S, the part number on the IACV got traced to 240, CA, R31 ect. weird haha. might have to get numbers off the turbo soon.

Sometimes intake hose clamps seem tight, but are not tight enough and get a whistle sound. Even check intake hose clamps on intake hose joiner / coupler off BOV, as it connects to intake pipe infront of turbo.

Sounds like stock GTR injectors, as I think they are yellow top.

that would mean i would need a resistor box and i have none?

Do you guys know where i can get and ignitor pack and ignition wires for the coil packs? If i buy yellow jackets do they come with new wiring?

love_boost, if without ballast resistor pack (it should have one if GTR injectors), could a the high resistance type of injector, which doesn't require a ballast resistor pack to drop to low resistance.

pmurr181, coilpack loom, igniton module on back of motor from parts department at Nissan Dealership. Yellow Jacket coilpacks are just the coilpacks only. Heard nothing but good about Yellow Jacket coilpacks. They use quality parts inside them.

thanks skym. Would you recommend yellow jacket coil-packs over spitfire?
