  • Cold Performance issues.

    Hey all,

Trying to bring a 90 gts-t back to life after sitting untouched for 5 years. The first issue to manifest its self was a massive hesitation under boost, like the engine just lost all power while continuing to rev. This issue was solved with a new fuel filter, but shortly after a new issue arose.

First start of the day it always takes several tries and sputters to life. Once driven or warmed it will start perfectly until it cools again. As it stands the car will struggle to go anywhere while the coolant is less than full temp, until positive boost is reached at which point it gains all power and takes off. As soon as it becomes fully warm the car appears to run normally, although I feel it somewhat lacks power still. I've run the car on laptop diagnostics while the issue was present and it appears that the timing is being retarded to 7 degrees while this issue is happening. In the process I've done:

    -New fuel filter.
    -New/gapped Spark plugs
    -New pcv
    -New o2 sensor
-Gutted Cat (suspected back pressure may be an issue)

-Vacuum at idle is 19 in/hg steady, no apparent boost or vac leaks.
-clean IACV+throttle+MAF, checked and cleaned most elec connectors, inspected MAF solder joints, injector cleaner, sea foamed, reset idle, reset ECU ect.
-Tried blocking off cold start/ aux-air valve, no difference (suspected internal vac leak here).
-Put a gauge on fuel line. Pressure is 38 psi at idle, climbing normally with boost.
-coils are reading 1.3 ohms resistance, but there does not appear to be any spark break up at any rpm, only a retardation in timing.

The car currently gets about 80-85 km/10 liters of gas. I'm unsure if this is poor mileage, but I feel as though it's not the best.

I've got a z32 engine coolant temp sensor coming in the mail as a cheap fix attempt. At this point the only things I've not tried are Cam Angle sensor, Knock sensors, checking/setting base timing, or a different ECU.

On a different note I've found the pcv valve and fuel filter from the 300zx a direct match. I suspect that the cold start valve, IACV, CAS are also a direct match visually and with elec connector. Unsure of actual compatibility but I'm interested in finding a parts z32 to pick from and find out!

Your input and opinion are greatly appreciated!

No comments? Just recieved the ECT sensor, will put it in this weekend and report back.

      I've been through the guides.
The ECT sensor I received for a 91 300zx (as suggested in compatible parts list) does not have a similar electrical connector. I notice the ECT used on most nissans 1996-current have a very similar connector, but before I take a shot at that does anyone know the compatible part.

That's normal. It's just the ECU pulling ignition timing, etc to protect engine during warmup. You need Nistune for stock ECU to adjust warmup tables, etc. Also need to adjust ignition timing, fueling, etc to suit mods.

Where should I head to get this sorter out? As is, its hard to get over 40 km/h and I have to drive around my community till I warm up or else I'd be a danger on the roads.

            Nistune dealer / tuner -

            Or a local tuner.

Also CAS when faulty can drop ignition timing by 1-2 degrees which makes it worse. Hard starting when hot, cold are symptoms of a faulty CAS.

With coolant temp sensor, engine should be running rich all the time. There should be a coolant temp sensor error code on stock ECU if coolant temp sensor has failed. First thing you do is always check for error codes on ECU.

I did put the ecu into diagnostic mode with no errors showing. Strangely enough in the last couple days my cold start issue has disappeared.. I'm looking at getting a timing light to check timing (don't have one suitable for coil packs). Thanks again for the advice I'll let you know if I get it solved.

                SOLVED!

Cold start up issues was related to a bad cam angle sensor, previous owners attempt to fix this had base timing set to 30 deg btdc..... after installing a new (used unit) CAS, cold start improved but even after setting correct timing the cold operation/timing pull issue still existed.....

Investigating the sensor arrays for the millionth time I found that the TPS sensor was set to 0.49 v at closed.. I adjusted it back to .448v on the suggestion I found on a different forum and have had no cold performance issues since.....

                  Good to hear.

Also, if had Nistune tuning software, it would have picked up on that TPS wasn't set correctly (idle contact light in tuning software wouldn't light up).

But ECU will still pull ignition timing and engine feel not as peppy until it is above certain coolant temp.

Thanks for all the help Skym, hopefully this thread helps out a future person with the issue. Trouble shooting this problem only served to have me fully tune up this engine and gain a huge amount of knowledge and experience with the RB.

im having something similar like you did toro...

except mine is related to knock sensors... no power above 4200ish , just sputters and hesitates... all sensors are good except ECU throws knock sensor... at this point im thinking its a ecu issue... so either going to be going to nistune or megasquirt but not sure yet...

Sputtering? Sounds more like a fuel delivery issue than a knock sensor issue. When I drove with knocks disconnected it would still sound audibly the same (engine noise) but timing failed to advance with throttle position and it power was pretty much flat... lots of boost and blow off though, just not going anywhere..

You're welcome, I agree that it should help someone with their car that has similar symtoms. You do learn alot from breaking stuff or things going wrong. Also it can be applied to other cars (similar problems).

Well according to my AF gauge I'm running rich so... and like I said. My ecu is throwing a knock sensor code. 34... so I think its running in limp mode.
