one thing i have learnt.... unless u wanna be a doctor or lawyer.... grades mean nothing! i only just passed yr 12, struggled my way through university and ended up making more money last year then anyone i knew. I know a few people who got near perfect marks at school and uni and cant get a job to save themselves because they dont have people skills or a personality.

ive got everywhere in life on my personality and knowing how to talk to people. **** i got 6 out of 20 for final math...... prolly cause i was to busy eating time tams and drinking beer. Yet i have always had good work.

People skills and personality are very important in the working world for sure. IMO one of the most important traits is CONFIDENCE. Being confident is contagious. If you have confidence in yourself other people will be confident in you too.

Hah...I'm 25 this year. I never took a break after high school. And you need good grades for more things than just a Dr or Lawyer :P It was tough at times to maintain a certain average in Nursing...there are some classes that really suck but you HAVE to take them, and HAVE to do well. It was VERY hard to stay motivated sometimes...and I know a lot of people are like that - hard to find motivation within school if you're still not sure what you want to do. The fact that I was finishing soon, and making a regular paycheque is what got me through. I didnt work much at all towards the end of my degree because I fast tracked (had so many extra credits so I didn't have to take as many classes as a lot of my classmates) and I had maxed out all my credit cards, and student loans and my lines of credit...kinda scary.


Once I've paid down some debt and want something new, I'm going to go back to school to get my Masters. Opens a few more doors...but that won't be for a few years.

Def not my thing. i went suceeded and still think it was a complete waste of time for me. Some people need that peice of paper to get the job they want. The amount of jobs i go for that say marketing degree required and i walk into the interview without one and they dont care because they know the peice of paper means shitall compared to personality, employment history and confidence

you guys are an insperation! lol. see, i hated school. i had that attention... disorder... oh A.D.D! (ps: when you have add, you dont forget what its called.... :roll: ) and thus, school was not my thing. i have to do stuff hands on. theres no way that i can sit in a class and listen to the teacher for so long, or even study a text book. BUT i think i am very personable. i am confident when i talk to people. my dad and my old boss were sittin in tim hortons one day and he said to my dad "i love having ben as an employee. anybody can drive a delivery truck. but not everybody has the people skills and attitude that ben does." so who knows... maybe ill go back to school, or maybe i wont need it. after all, there isnt a single thing that the uni offers that interests me other than learning japanese lol.

I realized that I can't stand a job where I have to make a sale, therefore Crappy Tire might not be the job for me. I held a job 2 summers ago working at the plastic part production plant my mom worked at, and I loved the job, but the heat the machines gave off coupled with it being summer was the only problem. Just a few months ago, I had an 8 week unpaid work experience at a Nissan dealership. Not only did I learn a lot, I loved helping out around the shop,even if it was only for school marks. That's why I'm having second thoughts about CT, and I'm looking around for weekend shop work where the place is willing to take on a high school student with some mechanical inclination/lot person(nudge nudge local sponsors who read this...).

Basically, I found out I loved to work with my hands. Anyone else realize that they had a passion for something, but got stuck at another job?

everybody is going to have a job that they hate. its rare for somebody to jump right into something they love. ive been through many jobs and i finaly found one that i dont mind going to every day. the reason i still like my job is because im a local truck driver. i deliver stuff from a building center/lumber yard. im always going new places, meeting new people, i have good days, i have bad days. but the fact that i spend most of my day driving, checking out new sceanery, listening to whatever i want, eating whatever i want, whenever i want.... getting stuff done on my own.... its a great feeling. im so glad to be out of the dress shirt and tie job where i spend my whole day in a store helping customers and doing the same thing day after day.

im in the same boat as you. i like to work with my hands. thankfully my job is physical labour aswell as driving. youll find a job that you like eventualy. if you can keep a job for 3ish years and still be happy about it, youve found a good job lol.

another thing...

my parents and my old gf were non stop trying to get my to go back to school or get an office job that paid more and all that. i told them that i refuse to do a job that i hate simply because it pays more. i will take a pay cut if it means i will be happier. if im gonna be doing a mind numbing repetitive job, id have to be making huge money.

id prefer to earn less and be happy with my job then earn more and be stuck in a job i hate waking up to every morning.

I think i got lucky.... my main job ive always had since 15 yrs old ive enjoyed. Ive had side jobs when times were tough that i didnt enjoy so much but my main one id actually like going to work to do.

Well in my case....

Try getting shitty grades and going for a degree in engineering!...doesn't happen.:hit_head: I've had to balance school and work so carefully so I could get the grades I needed to apply for my degree in mechanical engineering and still have money to waste on a car, entertainment, and lets not forget the girlfriend!

If you stick out school and have good grades it opens more doors for you in the future, just like Chris_RB was saying.

Good grades in school does make a difference. Just because you got average grades and have a better job than your friends means you have incompetent friends. Sure, once you get the degree you have the degree, but when it comes to Engineering it looks great on a resume to post your 3.9 GPA and all the scholarships and awards you've won.

My Brother is first year out, got some award for having the highest marks in the faculty in his final year, makes 140K a year at a job where he gets 4 months off every year, and is getting paid to go back to grad school. Something tells me he wouldn't be where he is if he slid through with a 2.1 GPA.

Also, getting good grades means scholarships, and scholarships mean less money spent on tuition.

as i said if u are in the area of doctors lawyer etc (engineering is classed as a high field of work so in the etc) then go for it.

Scholorships dont hardly exist in australia so no one bothers to go for them.
The fact i have better work then my friends just proves to me ur grades and degrees dont mean as much as everyone puts forward. My dad flunked school..... became a sparky worked his butt off and is now a mine manager in Aust earning more then most people would dream of (including myself).

the owner of the place I work at dropped out at grade 11.
he has 6 franchises set up in 17 years and he really doesn't know how to do anything besides make money (spelling, ideas, etc)

the lube shop attached to us is also owned by a moron but he lives in the nicest house I've seen with a lambo lp640 in the garage. had nothing 8 years ago.

like I said, I do EVERYTHING. my experience is incredible and right now that's more important than pay itself... looking long term...

so a couple months ago I finally found what I wanted to do, switched into the closest program available and have been nearly obsessed since with planning a path and then cutting a swath to make it. I'm hoping to land a paid placement/internship/summer job/part-time work somewhere closest to what I want to do later. experience experience experience. really makes you stand out on a resume, and the occupation I'm looking into in incredible competitive to break in to.

btw, I'm looking to be either a stock trader or an investment banker.
that's right. a fat cat. money money money. I'm obsessed with money and here are some figures that got me motivated lol:

Second year analyst: $150,000/year
First year associate (MBA): $170,000/year
Third year associate: $300,000/year
Vice president (3-6 years of work): $500,000/year

Managing director (7-10 years): $800,000/year
Department head (10+ years): $2,000,000/year

note, again, that is TYPICAL pay. I'm aiming for the big banks. notably goldman sachs... retarded pay.

so I'm 19 right now making $10.35/h. at age 30, I'll be aiming to be making ~$1,000,000/year. I could retire in one year's pay there. plop it in a 5% interest savings account and I could take $50,000 out per year and my 1mil wouldn't have gone anywhere.

ahhh thanks for rant space again. I love reminding myself of where I'll be in a few years :-D self-motivation FTW!
