  • List for legalizing my skyline...Do I have it all?

Basically I am going to post up what I have done, and I am wondering if It is correct, or I need to do more work...just want to be sure before I bring it in.

DRL'S -- Used a set of fog lights that are 390 mm above road surface (so legal height) and wired it into the cigarette lighter fuse box...clean install

3rd Brake Light -- My skyline has one of them on the spoiler....does this count as a high mount brake light or do I need to insall others?

Neutral Safety Switch -- Will be installed by a shop

Headlights -- Have a set pretty much mounted in, and have been doing a write up/taking pictures as I went along, so If they pass I will share with all. My only question is this... one headlight had the glass lens broken in shipping.
Will tehy accept this, as the projectors are still protected by another glass lens. (See pics)
I have also since removed all excess glass from the right headlight.

Sidemarkers -- I found a set of DOT/SAE approved markers that are approx 2" diameter, round, and apply by adhesive, but they are reflectors, and do not light up........do they need to light up?! And also, do I need 1 on the back 1 on the front of each side, or just at the back?

    Thanks for the help!

are you sure you need the neutral safety switch? and what are those headlights, they dont look bad..... props to you for being one of the people trying to get legal, im in the same boat. its not easy.

as for the 3rd brake light i think its ok, but your cracked headlight will most definatly fail, or else we would all be using the s14 headlight.

your side markers do need to light up, but its a very simple install an should cost less than 10 bucks, pick some up at lordco or napa or a place like that, also they have to be screwed in they cant be held by tape or anything like that

Here's how to properly install those lights if you scroll down and see my pics, you'll notice in the one pic where a spacer or bracket and a bolt should secure the inside corner. Neutral safety switches are only required on automatics, or a manual transmission with a remote starter.

        In B.C. you now need:
DOT headlamps (must DOT/SAE or E-Code and be OEM unmodified( you can,t alter or modify the headlight housing, becouse of rain gettin in ,it has to be able to aim properly, connot vibrate, move)
DRL module ( not a short cut rewire ) ( has too also activate the dash lights)but modules do that.cost is $27.99 @ Canadin Tire
Tail lights(Apparenty now unless you have a statement from some kind of engineer,( I heard $5000) but if you do it once the paper is good for however many cars you want to SELL a copy of the statement to !!) stateing that the JIS-japanese industrial standards- are equivilent to DOT-SAE standards you must change the lenses. this is not hard though there are round trailer light lenses replacements that they allow. (allegadly)
The taiil light bulbs have tobe swapped to 32W(brake) this is also easy(1176 or 1156 I think , originals are a 21W/5W
The glass must all be stamped with AS1 or AS2(some cheap Asian replacements do not bear this stamp and are not admissible)
        Third brake light
clutch safty switch (reqiured for manual and auto's regardless) ) so you don't hit the starter when in gear and roll forward)
Rear side markers ( must be red and DOT) I also belive there is a specific area
where it must be.This is easy , but use LED so as not to load the wires too much, you already put in higher watt bulbs.
front markers ( must be yellow) STINKY_1 has a rewire that uses the outside bulb to stay on when the lights are on( two indicator bulbs)
The bottom line is that Brian Kangas has not passed one Skyline since the crackdown. He told me he has seen it all ( welding, epoxy, all mods) nothing is passed yet(so he says) there is a company in Richmond that said they have a projector setup and is passes. But when I asked Brian again he said He never passed any Skylines since the clampdown.Total MALARKY, I think the government guys are playing GOD. nobody will tell anyone anything.Everbody says they will have a solution soon. I have heard it all. I GIVE UP. Its like they are trying to regulate things but can't agree on how to do it. It's FANTASY STORY time in B.C.
I think I have ranted enough for now

what about if you currently have it vin'ed registered and ordered for VI? Do you then fall under the new OOP? or it's just basic OOP..(if that even makes sense) Because technically speaking all Skylines they let in before are now considered illegal? Please advise..

I just want out ,it is very stressful for me I am not young ( 38 on 03/20/2007) I was going to buy an Ultima GTR kit from my home country ENGLAND but am scared . want a cheap R32 GTR- I am not a dealer and have a large disposable income so my car wil;l go for what paid

In B.C. when you buy a R32 that has already been registered(slipped under the radar) when you go to transfer the regi a RED flag comes up on the computer. IT says must be reinspected (ICBC)I was told that 1989 model is exempt. I was trying to get my friends to create a trust fund with my lawyer , but I have hemmoreged too much coin this year and the idea was POO - POOED

I went through and added true or false to the end of each statement. Some of them used to be true but are not anymore

                  In B.C. you now need:
DOT headlamps (must DOT/SAE or E-Code and be OEM unmodified( you can,t alter or modify the headlight housing, becouse of rain gettin in ,it has to be able to aim properly, connot vibrate, move) THIS IS TRUE
DRL module ( not a short cut rewire ) ( has too also activate the dash lights)but modules do that.cost is $27.99 @ Canadin Tire THIS IS NOT TRUE. THERE ARE NO REGUIRMENTS FOR THE DASH LIGHTS TO COME ON TOO
Tail lights(Apparenty now unless you have a statement from some kind of engineer,( I heard $5000) but if you do it once the paper is good for however many cars you want to SELL a copy of the statement to !!) stateing that the JIS-japanese industrial standards- are equivilent to DOT-SAE standards you must change the lenses. this is not hard though there are round trailer light lenses replacements that they allow. (allegadly) THIS IS NOT TRUE. MIKE WOODS HAS A PAPER ON HIS DESK FROM A ENGINEER THAT SAYS JIS LIGHTS ARE EQUAL TO OR BETTER THAN DOT! NO SWAPPING BRAKE LIGHTS OR ANY OF YOUR MARKER LIGHTS. JUST THE HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT. Covering up the stock lens with a DOT approved one is NEVER legal. The same as sticking reflective tape on the front marker lights with DOT printed on it. This DOES NOT make the marker light DOT approved. If it did, we could put a DOT sticker on our headlights and be fine as well. Luckily the report on JIS lights allows ALL our lighting except headlights. I know some shops do put reflective tape on as part of a compliance package, and also cover the stock lights with trailer lights. But this shop has also not gotten a skyline through an inspection since the new rules have come out. (fact not fiction or flaming)

The taiil light bulbs have tobe swapped to 32W(brake) this is also easy(1176 or 1156 I think , originals are a 21W/5W THIS IS TRUE,
BUT MUST BE DONE FOR ALL LIGHTS (expect headlight)
The glass must all be stamped with AS1 or AS2(some cheap Asian replacements do not bear this stamp and are not admissible) THIS IS TRUE
Third brake light SPOILER LIGHT COUNTS
clutch safty switch (reqiured for manual and auto's regardless) ) so you don't hit the starter when in gear and roll forward) THIS IS ONLY TRUE IF THE CAR HAD IT AND NOW IT DOES NOT WORK. SKYLINES NEVER HAD IT, SO YOU DONT NEED IT
Rear side markers ( must be red and DOT) I also belive there is a specific area
where it must be.This is easy , but use LED so as not to load the wires too much, you already put in higher watt bulbs. THIS IS TRUE
front markers ( must be yellow) STINKY_1 has a rewire that uses the outside bulb to stay on when the lights are on( two indicator bulbs) MY DIY IS LEGAL

I would like to confirm where you got some of these ideas from. The DOT brake lights specifically is completly untrue and is proven on IVOAC. SOme dealers that have not been reading on that forum have jumped to conclusions, and I think Brian and Mike will NOT willingly allow you to pass something if you are unaware of what is allowed now. They would rather you didnt know that JIS lights are OK, so you go through more trouble and they still fail you. I know some shops have been epoxying trailer covers on the tail lights and they say DOT on them. This does NOT mean your tail lights are DOT approved. Same thing with reflective tape stuck to the front marker lights with DOT written on it, sorry guys, but it doesnt work like that. Not if you want to get into the Letter of the law (as Mike seems to want)

I know I just confused you even more. But I wanted to clear up what I have seen as far as developments about this whole thing

Why would the 89 model be exempt?

Also...side markers do not need to light up last I was concerned...

...my 180sx passed without them lighting up...

...when's this little rule come into play?

                      Hey

My question is you guys keep mentioning, Mike woods, and Brian as the guys u have to please to pass a Skyline,

But do u not just take it to any DOT inspection shop?

why does it have to clear these two that are obviously like you say playing god?

Lastly, is that true about if u buy a skyline, it will be red flagged and u have to have it re-inspected?? cause i am trying to get my old one back, but if this is the case then i wont bother.

Mike and Brian are the 2 that eventually say "yes" or "no" to your car. You take it to any shop you want, but they have to take pics of your headlight modification and from looking at those pictures they decide if its good enough or not to pass.

And that is where the entire "god" complex is coming too. I really bveleive that neither of them will actually approve a skyline to pass.

This thread is getting a little carried away here, Brian has passed many other JDM cars with headlight replacements in the last few weeks, just nobody has done it right on a Skyline yet. There is one that I am aware of that after a minor bracket change to the mounting should be passed Monday or Tuesday. Also, Brian is up to speed on my personal headlight mods, and should have no problem when I go in later this week (if my low beams ever arrive from Lordco - I'm going in today to check, because they are supposed to be there....)

Referring back to all the misinformation listed earlier in the thread, I know where it comes from an can assure you most of it is plain wrong. It is obvious to me who this person has been talking to because I have seen an email from a controversial sponsor on here that details all this stuff and was sent out to a number of other dealers. The person that wrote the original email has no grasp on what is going on, and after being told that tail and marker lights were good as long as they have compliant bulbs has begun contacting the manufacturers of the light bulbs that are already in the car trying to get letters of compliance for them instead of just replacing the bulbs........
