  • Hmm...something to look into down the road I guess. Thanks Rick. But yeah its kind of a long shot unfortunately....if only the provincial/federal government could step in and somehow mandate these prices. The rest of the country pays 1/4 what we do and everyones fine! But thats asking too much.

    • So heres my question:
Most of these insurance companies insure vehicles all across Canada, therefore, they are likely insuring RHD in other provinces, correct? I know Ontario is messed in regards to insurance but is this due to a region specific policy on RHDs by the insurance companies or is it due to less regulation on insurance in Ontario? Information such as this may help us out in building a case to get these vehicles insured (and for a reasonable price).

      Thoughts??

      • Well, I know friends with Allstate and TD within Alberta and they pay (19-20yr olds) less than $150 a month. BC, SK, and MB have public insurance systems. For people trying to insure RHDs, this is a MUCH better system. Cause not only do they not discriminate, they provide DECENT rates!

That is an interesting thought....I remember a guy a few years ago, he had a modified STi in Quebec with a roll cage in it. His insurance company gave him a discount off the standard rate because they considered the roll cage to be a "safety device".
He moved just over the border into Ontario, and after a couple months the insurance company called and said they were going to raise his rate higher than the standard due to the roll cage being a "street racing device".
Same insurance company, same policy everything. The only difference was where he lived. It seems that the policy guidelines and regulations differ from province to province, even with the same company. Makes no sense to me.
But I'm sure the car dealers and insurance companies are in bed together, and the Ontario Gov is probably snuggling in between them which is why no action is being taken against insurance companies making up whatever rules they feel like.
So much for a democratic society. Same thing is happening with our internet and cell phones, but again, who knows if the people can force the Gov to stand on our side instead of the giant corporation's side.

            • I'm with Lant and have liked them, but the only issue I have is their restrictions as to where I drive the car and the fact I cannot "officially" DD it In all likelihood as soon as my driving record cleans up in the fall I'm going to Hagartys.

              • Does Lant require the 10yrs experience John?

                        • not with RHDs lol. If youre driving your grandma's old '87 Plymouth reliant wagon, heck yes.

its hard enough finding someone to take these cars on for less than your life savings, let alone get petty discounts (those school discounts are like 5% annually)

                            • I laugh at people over here on the Qc side that say it's cheaper to live in Ottawa...sure you pay less taxes on your revenue, but you pay it all back on car insurance and mortgages. Plus with the HST now, everything is more expensive.

                              • After trying for so long to get full coverage so I can finance from RightDrive, I think its safe to say that I give up lol. Sure a lot of places will take the car, but no one has any decent quotes when you're 18-25 and live in the GTA. It is all $500 + a month.
