I'll try looking for the stamping next time the car is on the hoist...but we'll know for sure when I pull the engine in a couple of months. N1 or not it is coming out.

      Nooooooooooo

Well, the engine is going to come out sooner than I expected. I was driving on the highway this afternoon, just cruising at 120 kph as usual and I felt a very progressive lost of power.

First thing I know I can't even accelerate in 5th gear. As soon as I pushed the clutch in, the engine died. Crank : nothing. Made my way off the highway on 4 way flashers...

Pop the hood open, huge cloud of smoke. Check the oil : empty. That's weird, I have a defi gauge for oil pressure and I never got the alarm...

No more coolant either. I think the engine ate it all. So what blew exactly is hard to say but after a while there was a big puddle of oil underneath the car. It probably has something to do with the oil I had in my coolant. Who knows.

      RB30 here I come !

          Update

          Little update:

I'm currently in the process of removing the intake plenum to have a better look at the failure (it's on that side of the engine). I couldn't completely remove it in a day so I had to come back to borden and leave the car in a friend's garage in ottawa. I won't be able to work on it for the next 2 weeks. That sucks.

I'm pretty sure it's the head gasket so. The engine still turns freely. Plugs look good as do the pistons. That's a relief.

It looks like my relocation kit might be the cause of the failure. The engine mysteriously ate all the coolant AND the oil and the overheat caused the shutdown on the highway.

My relocation kit has some earl's hoses and fittings. By looking at them, I can't say I was impressed. Some cheap hose clamps disguised as threaded fittings. That's a poser POS that almost cost me an engine. FU earl.

          Pics to come.

Is earl a guy that installed the knockoff lines or are you mistaking what you have for Earl's lines? All of earl's stuff is threaded.
            No build thread.

              LOL.....

Beware of the 'Engine Dressup Kit' with braided stainless hose covers/sleeves and half-cap-covered-clamps disguised to look like AN Fittings........

Unfortunately, this is exactly how the GREDDY $150 Oil filter relocation Kit comes.....direct from Greddy, which is why I ditched it in favour of, believe it or not, the Autobahn88 which atleast uses 'Earls Type' AN fittings.....even though they are knock-off fittings, they are closer than what I had with the Greddy kit.......lol

Well, unless it's a knockoff, it clearly says earl's on them.

Yeah that's what I have, the greddy kit...I'm gonna scrap it anyways. Back to filter-in-block for now.

Here are the fittings I was talking about. As you can see it's just a hose clamp in disguise.

On a positive note I found the cause of my catastrophic failure on my highway the other day:

It was the coolant hose going from the front of the block to the hard line on the side and eventually around the back of the head:

Getting the plenum off was a pain in the butt. I'm definitely going to pull the engine to put everything back together.

                    Well, that's it for now.

                      Time for a little update.

I recently moved to nova scotia where insurance is cheap, security inspections are loose and e-test are non-existent. The skyline paradise.

Bought a house with a huge garage:

                      Buy first house : check.

As far as the car goes, it came here on a trailer since I haven't fixed the coolant hose problem yet. I'm currently in the process of pulling the engine. I only have the driver's axle and 2 tranny bolts left....

                      Stay tuned.

                          I would probably go for: r32, r33 and r34.

But for now it's: tools, car and engine on stand.

                                Ok the engine is out:

But I can't fit it on my engine stand without removing the clutch. So what do you guys use as an alignment tool ?

An actual alignment tool or an input shaft or... ?

My plan with the car is to put it back together, change most of the water hoses and have a look at the oil cooler (it's probably the cause of my oil in water situation).

Hopefully I can drive it before the snow comes around. It's definitely gonna stay in the garage this winter.

Oh and I should get my bee-r kit in about a month...
