  • Update: I ordered some shims. My intake side should be good after that. For anyone interested: Tomei shims are cheaper than the nissan ones and they have a wider range too so no valve stem grinding...

    • i just read through your build, have you performed a leak down test with the cams out?

also when you installed the oil pump did u pack it out with assembly lube to prime it?
-can't wait for the next update... looks awesome

      • Thanks man.

Yeah I did a leakdown test with the cams out and everything check out good, aroung 5% leakage on all cylinders.

As for the oil pump, I primed it with vaseline.

        • Got a bunch of shims a couple of days ago. Tried to put them on the intake side (where they were supposed to go) and I still have clearance problems. Something's ******.

Is it because that the valve seats and the valves are machined down too much?

            Comment

            • Yup. That's why I need to replace the shims in the first place.

But I took measurements, ordered thinner shims and I don't have the expected results. It's probably because of the shape of the tomei shims...

It sucks but I'm not giving up ! I'll get it running...eventually....now freaking winter is coming......

you should still have until December before we get any snow fall here (well anything considerable). That buys you at least 2 1/2 months to get this on the road.

glad to hear your not giving up, you are more patient than most people.

                    • Worst thing is: I was taking my exhaust cam off probably for the 133374 th time and I snapped a cam cap bolt.. **** ME. Super pissed.

So i ordered the tomei cam cap studs kit. More delays...

                      • You must have access tosome good funds... Everything that breaks or you happen to need is ordered asap!

Question etienne: you did the engine removal and install with tranny on? I will be puttting my engine back in soon and wondered if it's possible with transmission on. For some reason I had the impression it was not.

                        • Yeah you can put both in. You'll have to jack the car up fairly high so the tranny clears your floor though

Keep givin'er etienne. It will be worth the wait!

                          • Thanks Ben. I know it'll be worth it. I can't wait. As for the cash well, I make good money with my work and around here there's not much to spend on so...

I did both (with and without tranny attached) and putting the engine back in with the tranny in one block is somewhat easier but not by much in my opinion.

It depends what you want to curse about: aligning the input shaft of the tranny and reaching for those bellhousing bolts or figuring out the right angle for the whole thing with your hoist and then move an inch, drop an inch, tilt a little, move, drop, tile, move, move, drop, tilt, raise again, tilt, drop, move, you got the picture :P It's a tight fit.

                            • ok, i was just wondering if it was possible. and it is, that's good. I got the money for my engine today!! so i should have new motor in fairly soon...

                              • Quick update: even with the smallest tomei shims, some valves still stay opened. Looks like I'm going to have to take the whole thing apart again and get the machine shop to grind the valve stems.
