  • That's true, and I understand that. The part about caring what people think is fine, there are a lot of people who buy cars just to look cool.

However using a video game to judge whether a car looks good or not or only caring that a car is fine as long as it doesn't "tip over" when cornering seems a bit too naive in my books, meh.
Another time was with a friend of mine, his neighbor asked what minivan he should get. My friend said to get a Toyota Sienna - a week later the neighbor came home with a Ford Windstar. What a piece of crap, it had so many issues and they got rid of it a couple years later and got the Sienna.

Their comment: "Wow, this is a great van, no problems at all!"
My friend: "Yeah... maybe you should've gotten this in the first place... "

    • Maybe your buddy isn't as mature as others.

But comparing a real car to a video game is like expecting a real woman to act like she's in a porno.... lol that's not reality.

So my friend (non-car guy) and I were talking about cars, since his family is buying a new Mercedes-Benz soon. You know the old question, "If you had X amount of money to spend on a car, what would you get?"

So we set a budget of $50,000. He said he would get a brand-new Mercedes, BMW, or some entry-level luxury car for just under $50K. I then say I would get a Grade 4/B R32 GT-R and mod it myself quite nicely, nothing too fancy so it would still be streetable. He then asks me to show him a picture, so I do and the conversation starts:

Him: "why would you want that? That's so old and ugly."
Me: "well I actually like the look, but the reason I really like this car is because of the straight-six engine coupled with the AWD system, not to mention this car first went into production in 1989 so it was so technologically-advanced for its time."
Him: "How about new cars then, $50K brand new, what would you get?"
Me: "Probably a 2015 Subaru WRX STI" *I then show him a picture*
        Him: "That's ugly too."
Me: "Well at the moment I can't think of a car produced today with a longitudinal straight six engine layout and AWD (that's not a new BMW), but I do like the STI."

Here is where the convo gets interesting:

Him: "Well, let's say you go to a fancy restaurant with your wife. If you go there with one of these cars, what will people think of you?! You don't want to be seen in a 'boy racer' car, would you?!"
Me: "LOL you actually care about that? I have NEVER thought about that or taken that into consideration when buying a car, ever."
        Him: "Aw god, you're hopeless."
        Me: ...

BUT here is what made me , the next day:

Him: "Hey, I heard there's a new Audi TT coming out. What do you think of it?"
Me: *as I bring up a picture* "Well I heard the reviewers said that it drives a lot better than the previous gen."
Him: "What the heck, I don't care about that. As long as it looks good, I don't care how it drives."
Me: "But sports cars are made to be a joy to drive..."
Him: "Well as long as it's comfortable to ride in and doesn't tip over, I don't care how it drives..."

He didn't even bother taking a look at the picture.

        Later on...

Him: "So what do you think is one of the best looking cars?"
Me: "Well I really like how the Mazda RX-7 FD looks, the late model with the 99 Spec front bumper and spoiler" *shows picture*
Him: "What the heck, that looks so ghetto..."
Me: " What the heck how? Yeah, it may have pop-up headlights which would clue into the approximate year it was designed, but other than that I think it's timeless and one of the best looking relatively-modern cars out there today."
Him: "Well I was watching gameplay of GTA V and there's a car that looks just like it, and it's always parked around the ghetto neighborhoods in the game."
Me: "That's because the game devs don't know what the hell they're doing! The Mazda RX-7 FD is one of the best looking cars out there!"
        Him: I don't like it.

Needless to say, we're probably not going to discuss things related to cars again.
Lmao sounds like you need to meet new friends! Your buddy is pretty shallow lol.

          • I was taking part in a car show this summer with my '91 4 door gtst. A couple kids come running up to my car. one kid turns to the other saying "this is a super rare 4 door mustang." When they walked around the back of the car they couldn't figure out why it say nissan skyline on the back. I was to busy joking with my dad to say anything. At the same car show everyone person that wanted to know more about my car kept walking up to my dad. my dad would then call me over and say "it my son's car not mine." the look on their faces were priceless.

            • The funniest commentary I heard so far was when I was pulling into a car meet and heard these two kids talking.

Kid 1: "Oh **** a four door Skyline!"

Kid 2: "Nah, that's just a Maxima with a body kit."

I've been daily driving my Skyline for a couple years, so I've gotten one of the big 3 noob questions almost everyday over that period. Even on a -30C winter day, people will cruise beside me in traffic with their window down. lol. Waiting for my lane to come to a stop. Then they will sit there beside me for quite a while, waiting for me to look over. Sometimes I avoid looking over and just ignore them. But most of the time I will roll down my window and politely answer all of their questions until the person behind them starts honking for holding up traffic, or the light turns green and my lane is moving again. Getting upset or being arrogant with them for not knowing about these cars is not really fair. So I'm always gracious about how I handle the attention.

The girlfriend loves my car most of the time... But if she's having a bad day and just wants to be left alone. Its not uncommon for her to say something like: "What the **** is everyone looking at? Grrr... I hate this car."

All the attention so far has been postive... In parking lots, driveways etc. It gets swarmed once in a while by kids or teenagers. Sometimes I'll walk out and answer their questions. Most of the time I'll just go back to what I was doing. Them purposly vandalizing the car never really crosses my mind. Apart from the occasional girl sitting on the hood for a picture, they dont pose a threat. Since its a daily, winter included, my risk tolerance is probably much higher than your average skyline owner here.

One time sitting in traffic I noticed 3 different people in three different cars, all taking a picture of my car at the same time on their cell phones... That was humours. Or when your stopped in traffic beside a six figure car, and your getting all the attention. You just can't help smiling about that.

                • I used to work with a guy who lived in Toronto for about 5 years. He kept telling me that Skyline's are illegal in Toronto because the cops can't catch them because they have a turbo and are too fast. I tried telling him they were legal there, but he was pretty skeptical. I asked him why Skylines would be illegal but not faster cars (I know, I know, sacrilege!) like lambos and ferraris.

                  • Breaking in my twin plate...

On or off there is no slippage. I laughed at myself after I did this. Sitting at a busy t-junction up hill. Stalled it twice cause the lack of slip makes the revs drop way down which took some getting used to. I just have to let out a with a bit more pressure on the gas. Anyways, this group of 20 something's was chirping me obviously not knowing the full details. After the second stall and letting my ego take the reins I did a hard drop and peeled out. I was so pissed at their comments I did a lap and pulled into the lot they were sitting in. I was met with open mouths on all of them. Politely reminded them that they should not judge a book by its cover and continued on my break in trip.
Lesson here is don't put an exedy twin plate on a street car... I really hope it loosens up a little bit.
