Wow the last thing I thought I wold hear..... there are no cracks in those welds and they have been x-rayed.
But thanks for comments.
Drew
Cold lapped welds (not enough fusion) doesn't necessarily mean it's cracked, it just means that the weld didn't actually fuse the metal together and is kinda just chilling on top. More of a solder than a weld.
mcfly and Canadian GTR have a point... either the welds on that particular piece didn't penetrate, or the guy went over them again to make them look nice for the picture.

What kind of material is it?
1 1/2" DOM .120 wall. I don't know what to say other than i wont take a sledge hammer to it to check, it is very possible that he went over the pass over. He is a very skilled welder and knows what is required for cage work.

I wasn't saying it wasn't fused, the top edge definitely is.
The bottom just looks a little rolly, which with mig we all know should make you worry a bit. Especially in a 2g
Regardless make sure you coat that cage with a clear coat or paint, now that it has been cleaned up it will rust in humidity.

My guess he did a root pass and then went over top to make it cosmetically pleasing. I say this because it looks like a couple of the welds in other pictures had good penetration and weight.

Plus it was done in one sitting, it was over a couple of days.
Cool Bro, thanks for the props.... If you have your license back you should come out during testing and try the G. If Glen decides not to run the car maybe we can split the expense for Sundown and ICAR.
I leave for Europe on Friday. I want to get FSAQ to give me something tentative so I don't get hasselled at some of the Tracks I'm going to. I'll be at the opening round of Time Attack NL at Zandvoort on March 1st. I'll be on the Nurburgring on March 5-8. We'll talk again when I get back.
