Exactly...you just nullified your own point. The argument is on how people respond in similar situations...people being the operative word here.

"Demographics are a little different in rural, costal japan than in New Orleans"

This is precisely where the direction of the conversation is going right now, everyone is commenting on what kind of "people" the Japanese are. When the Japanese face devastation they come together and rise up, when the Americans faced devastation with Katrina they looted.

This is also an excellent comparison of the priorities of the 2 governments. Japan wants to help it's people, where as the U.S. was too busy using all of it's support trying to change the world.

Keep this respectful guys, this isn't a place for immature pictures. I won't ask again.

As for the comparison between Japan and Katrina it's impossible to compare. 2 different societies, 2 different income levels. No one will win this one so let it go.

Im still scared for the people in Japan and people on the west coast of America and Canada ect with radiation. I seen that second explosion. I doubt thats from just hydrogen. That blew over a thousand feet in the air with a mushroom cloud! I have friends in japan that are already on KI and suggesting that people on the west coast pick it up and by the looks of the stocks of KI, its already off the shelves.

Gov't.'s paying lots of attention to this. There's no risk as of yet to anyone on the west coast. 30KM no-fly zone has been established around the reactors to prevent planes from spreading any radiation. And any radiation managing to work its way over (Approx. 4-5 days) would mostly dissipate into the atmosphere by the time it arrived in BC (etc.). Any that DID arrive, would be a non-dangerous amount. They're watching the readings very closely

By the time any radioactive Iodine-131 reaches our shores, even IF all 4 reactors have a total melt down the dust will be dispersed so much 10,000' in the air and from 4-6 days of travel it will not do any harm.

If you live in Japan, by all means down the KI until you know it's all good but we don't need to worry here. Even total melt down of 4 reactors will not even be close to the level of radiation Chernobyl produced.

Looks like they've stopped trying to cool the reactors. They had a huge radiation spike and pulled everyone out. Not good at all :S

Right, should've added that part. Haven't given up yet! Apparently #2 and #3 (I think those were the reactors) are leaking steady streams of radioactive material, as the concrete/metal buildings were severely damaged in the explosions from yesterday and today? I'm really hoping they can get this fixed before anything worse happens.

I read in today's Globe that there are 800 nuclear workers trying desperately to control the nuclear reactors. Of that group they are pulling out 750 and 50 have elected to stay behind in rotating shifts to carry on. All of them are resigned to the fact that they will subject their bodies to toxic levels of radiation and they will die from it but it is the price they are willing to pay for the sake of the country and the world. Incredible heroism...

but when does it end? If they give their lives and they're just delaying the unstoppable, it's almost in vain, isn't it?

You could see it like that, but if those people are willing to sacrifice their lives because they honestly think they can fix it, than vanity is out of the question!

I think those people are willing to risk there lives no matter what the outcome. cause that is how much they care. They have no way of knowing if the outcome of the acts will stop the problem, or just slow it down.

Thats the risk with partaking in an act like that. You do it cause you know its the right thing to do. At the end of the day, It's better to say you tried and failed, than to not try at all.

I think we are ok, until the radiation and heat levels get intense enough to melt the containers they are in. then the world should worry. But honestly. It should never reach that point. If people act now. and when i say people, i mean other countries, we should be able to stop it. Atleast stop the spread, or stop it from getting worse. Im sure countried such as the U.S and russia have "stuff" that can help cool and such.

Why do people always act when its to late. Why not take precautions

I am not a scientist, never was good at it. So im not speaking scientifically. Just as a concerned human being

The human mentality seems to be a lot different as well in Japan than Europe or USA/Canada of "me me me".
