  • holy **** what a day. literally spent the entire day getting the turbos to be perfect. had to go and pick up studs to mount them to the exhaust manifolds, had to do some shaving/cutting of the oil return lines on the turbos becuase for some reason, these turbos have smaller holes for the oil outlet, and water inlet. usually this turbo is the exact same as stock so we are doing some investigation to figure out what the hell is up. but i got the oil outlets to work, spent hours putting the turbos on and taking them off trying to clock them properly, and had to add all the oil and water lines to them. the water inlet though is too big, so ill have to cut the threaded ends off, and find some new fittings, then use some pipe as an adapter from the new fitting to the oil lines. not very much fun! provided that only takes a couple hours, i should have the tranny bolted up to the engine tomorrow around early evening and can start dropping the goods in!

    • So I haven't updated this in a long time. Mix between being real lazy, and real busy. I had the engine in, ready to fire up 5 days after I got the engine back. I was turning the motor over to build oil pressure, and if you've read this build thread, you'll know it pissed oil last year on the first build. Well it pissed out a hole again this year. But what happened was I originally took my engine to a local shop in Edmonton to get done. I only asked them to check the size of the cylinder that was damaged to see what size pistons I had to go with. Shortly after them doing what I told them to do, I picked it up and took it to Lightspeed innovations in red deer. I had cam build the longblock, which he did an amazing job of. Anyways, the engine was pissing oil out the front and back of the block. The original shop I took my engine to had began stripping the block to clean it, which I didn't ask them to do. And they drilled out two plugs which people usually never drill out. Lightspeed did not know this, therefore didn't catch it cause we all know how many holes there are in these blocks. Even though it wasn't their fault, Lightspeed still fixed it for free WHICH WAS AWESOME! Saved me about a $2500 bill. So I got the car back from them, fixed a few leaks of things that needed to be tightened, put the 1500kms on it for break in, and now the car was just dropped off yesterday back to them to have the meth kit installed, and tuned. Looking very forward to the numbers. I'll post pictures of the car on the next post. Also made it to the driven car show in Calgary on June 9 so I have a couple of really clean pictures.

Tommy Kaira front bumper. Im not a huge fan either, but the stock rebar doesnt fit with this big of an intercooler, going to get some of the nismo style skirts and rear spats to even out the rest of the body in the future. wheels will come if the new brakes in the future need it.

I have fitted alot of -5s to vehicles here in AUS. All require the oil return tube to be modified. What we usually do is use the oil returns of the HKS 2530 kit (basically the same turbo). The HKS part numbers for the oil drains are G15450-N48031-00 for the front and G15450-N48022-00 for the rear. Part number for the gaskets is 14008-AK001. We also use the HKS oil line restrictors for these turbos also as your are going for plain bearing to ball bearing turbo's.

As with the coolant line to the side of the turbo, sounds like you havent pulled the fitting of your old turbos and fit them onto these ones. It usualy goes Coolant hard line, to fixture, then the fixture bolts to the side of the turbo with a copper washer sealing it. I have never had an issue fitting the coolant lines to these turbos. All the mods required is for the oil drains.

                  Hope that helps

                  • Thanks man! We have already gotten all the lines hooked up fine. No leaks. The car went back on the dyno, made 475awhp @17psi, no meth. And then the Nismo fuel pump failed. Only pushing out 60LPH. So we contacted tomei in Japan, ordered one to be overnighted, and the day comes where it's suppose to be at the shop, no pump. Tomei effed up and said they had one ready to be shipped in stock, but they just had the parts to assemble the pump. Needless to say, they are direct shipping it, not via states, and it should be here within a day or two from now. Will hopefully have the car back this week.

                    • Goodie goodie. I have to have the Worst extreme luck with this god damn car. So after a about 800kms of break in (back in June) I noticed a little bit of oil in my coolant. Wasn't too worried because it was a small amount and I wasn't getting any coolant in my oil. I finished my 1,500kms for break in and dropped it off at Lightspeed. If you read prior, you'll know I ran into more issues.

Well, to left off of my last post, we got the new fuel pump in and the car made 572awhp and 475ft-lbs torque.

Awesome I thought. Cam at Lightspeed was feeling uneasy about the oil in coolant issue and the fact that the car was starting to overheat at idle. So he pulled the motor and was expecting to replace a head gasket (I still haven't driven the car after the tune). He pulls the motor to find that we made 572awhp on this.....

Just one of the turbos was like this. Pissed about this, but happy at the same time because I made 572whp on less than two turbos. So he continues to take the head off the motor, and finds this!!!!

And the best part, there are about 8 cracks, and all on one side of the block. Either going from a head bolt hole to a water jacket, or from a water jacket to a water jacket. So here comes BUILD NUMBER THREE. And I have only driven a successful 150kms in my car built and tuned. We are now going to order a brand new N1 block, new pistons, a new turbo, and since the engine is out, I bought a full samco heater hose and rad hose kit. Also going to change all the oil and water lines out. This thing should see the roads for spring 2013 since everything else is done on the car except bottom end.

                      • Sorry to hear this again!

Did you find out why the compressor wheel looked like that?

                        • No clue yet. They haven't looked at the intercooler yet to see if anything got stuck. They could tell small bits went through cause they could see it in the cylinders. But hardly anything. If this next build doesn't go according to plan, I'm going to buy a fully built tomei engine, get them to install it in a car from Japan, and ship it the f over here. Along with one of their tuners.

                              • Did you check the engine mount on that side of engine, where the cracks in block are??? It could have cracked due to high cylinder temps, colder coolant (cracking from coolant galleries points to that), or engine was flushed when block was hot and the cracks were there from that, thus got worse.

A mod to do, would be fitting this crank bracing kit to bottom of block -

It helps to strengthen bottom of block.
