  • Ideally you don't want to go above 550hp at engine with stock forged I beam conrods, stock conrod bolts if engine is driven hard lap after lap on a racetrack.

Stock forged I beam conrods with upgraded conrod bolts (ARP, Tomei, etc), Tomei forged pistons can handle up to around 700hp at engine on the dyno and has been proven many times over (some lasting up to 100,000kms). But when look into how those cars have been driven, that's only a few hard laps on racetrack and they pit, mainly street driven, not lap after lap after lap for 40 laps or more.

Revs is what damages conrods (inertial load). If want to make the hp you keep revs low and use the boost level to make the hp (also cams, camtiming helps) instead of revs as you would with NA engine. Bonus of having a turbocharged engine. The increased load from the increased boost level is supposedly less than reving the engine more.

All parts fatigue and once excede it's max load rating it's only matter of time before it fails. I know Nismo crack test, shot peening, etc each conrod for the N1 RB26 engines and use the best 6x conrods and those engines have been known to handle up to 700hp on stock bottomend (I think was a engine dyno). Around 500hp at engine is the limit for longevity in a 24 hour race for a N1 engine (not exactly a factory engine as found in most production based GTR's, as the piston ringland design is different, block design as far as coolant, oil galleries, etc are different, etc).

Yea this si why Im thinking I wanna upgrade the head mildly. Im not building to over rev, Im building because the stuff inside right now is 25 years old and I dont trust it, and If im gonna be in there anyways, why not build in case I do want to rev slightly higher someday. Im looking for something that would be 1 or 2 steps up from stock, thats why the supertech dual coil spring kit looks a bit more serious that I want. Just looking for suggestions on what I should look into.

      • Sussex engine builders do a lot of very good work (so I'm told) they MIGHT answer some questions for you. Also they might tell you to pound sand if you're not spending money in their shop.
Better still, have Armstrongs in Kingston NS build the head for you. They are among (if not the) best in the country. Allan and the guys there will be able to tell you exactly what you will need and they don't BS.

Sussex ER is long waits and high prices cuz the think they are the worlds best machine shop cuz they build local pro stock stuff. I cant stand them. I might look into armstrong, I dont need them to build, just machine work.

with the oem guides, and valves and new supertech or oem valve seals, would these be too much for my application?

            • Best to let the cylinder head shop work it out, as is quite technical.

Tomei mention when you do a three angle valve job you need the washers with Type-A valve springs (most likely with Poncams if using Type-A valve springs) -

It's best to stay with one brand as far as cams, springs, etc go for reliability.

I called manley today. They said their spring/retianer/lock kit will work fine for me, and is a slight step above oem stuff, which is what I want. I just stripped the old head tonight, gonna soak it in some thinner and pressure wash it to clean it up this week, and take the die grinder to the casting lines in the valve bowls, and get rid of the exhaust hump.

After that it gonna go to machine shop for valve job and a plain, all while saving enough money to buy some valve train upgrades lol. Im gonna reuse the stock valves and guides.

                • Nice build! It'll be interesting to see what whp ya pick up from the cams. I wouldn't cheep out on valve guides, replace them while your in there.

                  • So I started and finished the rough work on the head, took out casting marks in valve bowls, and coolant jackets, as well as de-humped and gasket matched the exhaust side. If anyone else is considering doing this, use the long cylindrical grinding bits for a die grinder, way better than the xmas tree shaped ones. Heres some random pics of before/after. Keep in mind this sint yet sanded or polished. My head is currently sitting in a big tub of water/varsol/soap/wheel cleaner for 24hrs to try and clean it out of junk, gonna pressure wash it tomorrow night after sanding and polishing the exhaust side.

                    • So time for more updating I guess...

Tonight I took my head and valves out of the mustard gas mix I created and pressure sprayed the head, as well as cleaned the valves Turned out pretty damn good for a 130xxxkm head thats been sitting for three plus years.

Still needs some scrubbing, but over all did a fantastic job. Downside is in the transport process to the wash bay and back, i lost 6 of the 12 spring seats that were seized in their place.

After this, I decided to try the next stage of the exhaust porting, and used and alminium oxide dremel bit to smooth the rough cut job.

Overall pretty good, next step as 220 the 320 sanding, followed by two cuts of polish. should be half decent when done. I got monday to the machine shop to have the head plained and a valve job done.

Anyways, I was gonna start sanding, but my eye decided to get a piece of aluminium stuck in it, and after that nightmare I decided I had enough for one night and went inside to play some destiny. What an awesome game lol.

                      • So the gasket match and mild polish to the exhaust side is finished, as well I gasket matched and drilled out the oil returns in the head. Going Monday for machine work and its finished.

They feel super smooth and are done as far/deep as my dremel and sand paper would reach lol.

                        • just a quick update before bed. Got my head back from machine shop today, full valve job and plain she looks mint! And is all ready for when I can afford my Manley kit in a few weeks.

On a side note, I might have a lead on a Precision 6265 with billet wheel and divided T4 for a good price. I figure from reading that this turbo is comparable to the BW ive been drooling over, and I cant argue with the price.

So Ive decided to pull my engine before storing the car, and building my current block instead of buying another. Also got my LS2 coils all mounted and ready. Just gotta do some wiring, then install my new AWD pump.
