  • Houston, we have compression. - Cheesy saying, I know, but damn am I happy. Epic 30-minute early birthday gift!

Future looks bright for this little RB20 of mine, she's putting out around 180PSi +/- per cylinder after putting a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder and cranking with the starter (as recommended) with my brand new comp. tester. Party anyone? LOL

And indeed, compression should be low for a brand new engine, if the break-in goes as planned, it should be absolutely fine!

Oh, edit for pics, put the test valvecovers on, look pretty nice I think. Cant wait to put the green ones back on. Gotta finish cleaning them up. Anywho, here's the engine in it's timed glory (yes, crank was rotated before i took these pics so don't look at timing marks ), put the HKS gears and Nismo timing belt that were used on my engine last year and torqued everything to exact spec.

    • I have never been more excited to build my engine lol. Awesome build. So nice to see all the attention to detail, a lot of people start getting impatient and stuff gets missed. You are downright meticulous though lol.

        • ARP has different torque specs that OEM head studs. And yes you will get low compression till the rings seat.

With the future power figures I plan to produce (however it's becoming slightly debatable due to the epic loss of money ) requires some sort of strengthened internals, I figured, since the engine's out, why not just build it? Thanks for the praise dude, how's your car coming along?
Hey Mark not too much actually, sorry about the late response. It's coming along good almost done. I couldn't find a crossmember so I just went the McKinney route. Wiring was taken care of by HeatW and everything seems ready to rock for maybe a first time start this weekend. I'm so glad to see someone is building an RB20DET properly, what turbo are you running? Going with a front facing intake mani? Congrats on the progress and I still drool over your car. Oh, quick question, where did you find the RB20 clear cam cover? I also believe I am the owner of your old SMIC now (according to Shawn) . You have any 3" couplers laying around I need one for the hot pipe to turbo outlet or even the hot pipe to turbo outlet pipe if you can find it. I got money ready . And my RB20 on a dry test is 170psi thru all six... never been rebuilt... bought it like that, so as with you I'm having a party in my pants as well .

Thanks very much for the compliments! I'm glad I could be of inspiration, and I'm equally as excited to see how yours turns out when the time comes ! About the detail...ask a few of the board members that I talk with...apparently it's in my nature and they think I'm OCD lol . All jokes aside, I just like to do things once and make sure they've been done properly, which I stress on any project, be it an engine build or a tiny modification, do things properly. Thanks again for the praise, let me know when your build is on it's way so I can see how it comes along and don't hesitate to PM if you have any questions!

Hey Chris, long time no talk man. First off, thanks for the praise and good comments, I'm honored . Yeah, I was SUPER LUCKY to find my crossmember extremely quickly, I would have gone with McKinney mounts as well had I not been able to find it. Either way, both are excellent choices, can't go wrong either way. To answer your questions, I'll still be running the stock turbo for break-in (just to make sure everything is as close to stock as possible, which will help me keep the A/F ratios in good proportion seeing as I dont have a tunable ECU. Later on I will be running that TO4 60-1 Turbonetics. I'm contemplating the front facing intake plenum, but still have to look into it more, and, even if I made a choice, I simply wouldn't be able to afford it. The RB20 clear cam cover was a 26 cover that I modified myself. Ah! Indeed, you are the new owner of my SMIC lol, I do believe I have some Vibrant couplers sitting here, brand new. Looks like we'll be firing up both of our RB's for the first time this weekend . Sent my PM with email addy, shoot me a msg on MSN and we'll take it from there.

                • Nistune would be a cheap way to have a tunable ECU and you don't need to retune straight away. Can run stock maps.

                            • she runs strong!!!! Just have a few little minor bugs to sort out (the famous high-idle problem that this engine always had has returned), narrowed it down to TPS and AACV. I'm trying to get AS MUCH work done as possible in these few days as I'm trying to get the car together and get out to a show this Saturday. I'll get you guys a video soon, thanks for your patience!

Rabbit, would you happen to have a spare AACV man? This is an "I needed it yesterday" situation lol.
