        is that compressor wheel plastic?

        I'd just rebuild that turbo locally with metal wheels rather than dropping near 2K on a turbo.

          that is un real... where those shards in the intercooler? and the exhaust wheel was also messed up!? geezus, now its like a super mystery.. what caused it alL!?

          that video just says it all.. epic sound....

          sooo much damage, that sux so hard man

            Lol, its pretty wild to say the least..

            Zacho, yea, the restrictor was in as i was under the impression it was ball bearing.. I took every step necessary to make sure things would be solid for the summer. No idea as to why the failure happened yet, but like i mentioned much earlier, after having installed the turbo, there was a prominent zing/whine sound from the getgo.. Assuming bearings were on the outs.

            M13, honestly lol. I have NO freakin clue. My dad is saying that the impact just melted them enough to look this way, but to be honest i dont really know what to think.. It looks almost/ feels almost like plastic, no joke. Would be strange?.. I've actually heard of an epoxy turbine wheel before but ive never seen one first hand..
            Rebuilt is certainly an option! And Adam has brought that up as well.
            My only issue is where? and how long?.. how much? If turn around time is months, it will be a winter project none the less, and if the price is upwards of a G, a 2871 or 76r will do justice at around 1100$..

            If you know any solid shops that HI-flow turbo's in Canada, let me know man, i would certainly be down to get more info!

            On another note, Adam has been great and giving me lots of feedback. He's searching for a turbo at the moment and has suggested i attempt to do a rebuild, and that he'd refund me a part of the cost to help me out. Truly great sponsor, he definitely lives up to his reputation.

                  i have a feeling that turbo was rebuilt with second rate stuff and was not rebalanced once put pack together. An off balance turbo would definatly see that kind of destruction. Thank god for intercoolers to block all that crap from hitting the engine

                    Man that is pure CARNAGE really sad to see that turbo so damaged

                    I got my HKS turbo rebuilt by blaast performance in st-jospeh-du-lac near OKA

                    however I haven't installed it yet so I can't yet vouch for the quality... See my project thread for details...(soon to come need to take pics)

                    BTW gald the ECU worked out good, I'm not too rusted after all hehe

                          Chris, yea it's horrible, but what can ya do. Luckily my intercooler from Brian held up hahah. I'm just fortunate it didnt destroy my intercooler, or even worse, my motor!

                          This would have been a epic fail of a summer..

                          • marc thanks again for the help tonight, just thought id chime in on this.. ADF diesel.. the manager there owned a GTR that had over heating issues... hes a chill guy and they have a massive truck dyno, for the 18 wheeler style truck. and huge huge turbos there. thats on hymus

                            your car could be heard for like 4 minutes after you left the driveway hahaha.. i was like.. oh we can still here him!! lol.. i love the exhaust tone man, sweet sound.

                            • Yeah a rebuild would be nicer on the wallet and would give you a better output per dollar.

                              Please don't spend 2000+ on a new turbo, chances are you'd have to run different downpipe and external WG, manifold, etc. = another 1500-2500 on top of turbo.

                              Rebuild/high flow would be good, 500-1500 dollar range and price would depend on what you choose to do.

                              I'm pretty certain that those wheels are plastic, I've heard of em being plastic but never confirmed. Either way with that bearing damage it'd damage steel/aluminum comp. wheels too but plastic carnage is just horrendous. I recommend you to blow some air from the opposite side of FMIC to blast out any remaining shards.

                              • Wow.

                                According to a turbo rebuilder it's called a hybrid turbo, as it uses another CHRA, compressor wheel, exhaust wheel, stock compressor, stock exhaust housings. From what I understand high flow is polishing housings, etc to increase flow. Rebuild is using the same parts (compressor, exhaust wheel, CHRA, etc) but replacing what has failed inside CHRA, etc.

                                Bearings don't fail quickly unless turbo wasn't primed before starting engine (pull CAS plug off and crank engine). That's probably the quickest way you can damage a new or good condition turbo in a short period of time. Or thrashing car that has no engine oilcooler and hot shutdown (not letting engine oil temperature cool enough before turning engine off) has caused bearings to fail.

                                If it's a R33 RB25DET turbo, not uncommon for compressor wheel to shatter. But both wheels shattering looks like bearing collapse on both sides of turbo which is rare. Stock turbo bearings usually collapse on compressor side and get a whine noise (that's how stock turbo failed on my car) but exhaust side is intact.

                                I would replace the intercooler core after a turbo failure like that. Chances are you won't get all of the pieces out of the intercooler core. Better to be safe than sorry.
