Is there an overseeing board that brokerages have to get licensed from that I can complain to?

I find it pathetic that you work in an industry that values 'old boys club' friendships over the best service for the client. There's no other place in the world besides the GTA where insurance companies can rape us this bad.

I'm going to make calls all week, and try various things until I get a reasonable quote.

    Keyword: try.

Those ARE guidelines. And those are in no way "methods of wasting time".

I have written down a very easy to follow guideline on how to get insurance on a RHD car, if you're not willing to do it, or you feel that it's too tough, that's not my problem.

How do you think *I* got insurance on my car? I can't call up any of my broker friends or even do it myself because:

    1) If I insured my car at my brokerage, I would be fired within 24 hours. I am not exaggerating or bending the truth, I have watched many a co-worker be escorted out the door for violating brokerage policies.

    2) If I called up a broker friend... I wouldn't have a friend for much longer. Yes, I could legally force their hand (which is EXACTLY what the above guidelines show you how to do) but I'd be setting a friend up to get canned.

For me to get insurance I had to do exactly what everyone else had to do. Call someone I don't know, haven't met, probably never will and jump through hoops.

Before I called, I checked the brokerage's website to see that they deal with Company X, Company Y and Company Z.

"Hi, My name is Geoff XXXX and I'm looking to get a quote on car insurance"

"Sure Geoff, happy to help, could I get your address please?"

"I live at XXX XXX XXX"

"And what do you do for a living?"

"You're not allowed to ask me that"

"Sorry, we ask because we may be able to offer additional discounts"

"Discounts or not, you're not allowed to ask me what I do for a living in regards to auto insurance"

"Year make and model of your vehicle?"

    "1992 Mazda RX-7 Twin Turbo"

    "What's your date of birth?"

    "November 4, 1981"

"When did you get your G1, G2, and full G license?"

"I got my G1 in October of 1999, I went through driver training and got my G2 8 months later, then my G one year after that"

    "Are you currently insured?"

"No, my car has been in storage over the winter, I have however had previous auto insurance for a number of years"

"Within the past 3 years has any auto insurance policy in your name been cancelled for non-payment of policy premium or material misrepresentation?"

    "No"

"Within the past 3 years have you received any traffic tickets of any kind"

    "No"

"Within the past 6 years, have you been involved in any form of auto accident or insurance claim?"

    "No"

"How about within the past 10 years?"

"No, the last claim I've made against auto insurance was over 11 years ago, and that was a theft claim"

"Just give me a minute here and let me work out your quote"

    "Thanks"

"Ok Geoff, based upon the information you've provided me, the best rate that I have coming back for you is $XXXX with Company X"

"Could you also tell me the prices you have coming back with Company Y and Company Z?"

"Sure, Company Y was $XXXX+1 and Company Z was $XXXX+2"

"Thanks. Now I need to ask you a question: Does Company X have a filed rule against insuring Right Hand Drive cars?"

(At this point the broker starts to sweat because he knows he's boned)

"I'll have to check their underwriting manual and get back to you"

    "I'll hold"

"Sir, it doesn't seem that they do, but unfortunately we're not looking to write your type of risk at our office"

"Well, that's unfortunate because you're going to have to, you are legally bound to provide me insurance that I qualify for, whether you like to or not, please draft up the application and send it to me to sign"

    ************************************************** *******

Yadda yadda yadda, that's how you get insurance.

You're going to have to do some of the work yourself, this isn't going to fall easily into your lap, there's no broker out there that's going to happily walk you down the path to cheap and easy insurance on your RHD sports car.

You may legally qualify for it, but you need to do some work yourself.

          • Well, not 100% sure yet. But it's looking like the insurance company I was supposed to go with will not insure me to drive the car because I'm not 25. Like, are you kidding me? I have a clean record, I've never had insurance cancelled or done anything dumb. I've been constantly insured since I got my license. This is ridiculous...

            • It most certainly is ridiculous. You'll find someone, hang in there and be persistent! And give the company hell for not insuring you like they promised. Maybe offer to add another vehicle policy or house policy to give them incentive to insure you.

Thats how i got my Pajero insured. Brought my house, wife's car, and boat (at the time) to them.
It's still pathetic i had to do that though. I'm married, 34, clean record, and it's a diesel SUV.
I'm also a truck driver with over a MILLION accident-free MILES.
This is with Gore Mutual through my broker.
I think they have since filed that stupid no RHD thing to rub it in even more.....but doesn't hurt to ask..
Skylines I wouldn't know, have always used LANT.

                  • When my broker called me stating my RHD insurance was being cut-off, this is what I sent to the head of the actual insurance company.....
Hello. I currently have three vehicles which are righthand drive and am searching for a new insurance company after my current company has informed me that "they no longer insure RHD vehicles". My wife was in a minor fender bender last year, but otherwise we have an impeccable driving record. I am 41 years old, and have never had a violation. I would like to commit to a company for life/home/auto insurance but will not unless it is all or nothing....If you are willing to assist please let me know...Thanks for your time...Kevin
Presto.....full coverage a day later....going to buy the president a nice bottle of ice wine......

                      • I find it easier when you have at least 1 LHD car thats worth more than the RHD your trying to insure. It also helps that you have a house and life insurance with them as well.
I worked at both allstate and state farm and I will tell you first hand what kind of ******** rhd, espicially skyline, owners put on me. It was constantly
Customer: "hi I would like insurance for a 90 nissan skyline gtr its from japan"
Me: ok sir how much did you purchase the car for?
                        Customer:"well the appraisal says 60k"
Me: how much did YOU pay for it
                        Customer: 60k
Me: theres no way you payed 60k for a 90 skyline that has an exhaust, intake, rims and looks clean
Customer: how would you know? these are rare cars from japan.
Me: cause mine is parked outside

and the ones we let through most would call us in 2 weeks or months and claim there was a little accident. While the guys 16 year old son was driving the car he somehow hit a puddle of water, mid july need i remind you, and wrapped it around a pole. Cars a write off and he wants "the money he paid for it" ie. the amount on the appraisal. You guys need to accept these are high risk cars cause kids can get them for 4-10k. Sure you think your GTR is worth 20k but its not.

When I worked there at first it was make sure they guy is a responsible driver, then it was reject the high value rhd's (mostly skylines with high appraisals), then it was make sure they have another LHD car of higher value to add to the policy, Then it became **** it dont insure them. And dont say EVERY skyline owner is responsible and never wreck cause there were a lot of them.

                        • I have my truck on as primary and the skyline secondary(or occasional) and state farm covers the R32 for $1900 for every 6 months. so basically skyline in the summer, truck in the winter..its a good dealio. It took them about 3 weeks to get back to me on a quote because they had never heard of a skyline before(or at least my insurance agent hadnt)
