That strange clicking sound...

I think I solved the puzzle for this one. I'm probably wrong but this is what I'm assuming so far, and i think its a safe assumption:

The clicking sound Joker and I are experiencing seems to be different that skyline_steve's (see link in above post). No HICAS lights are lit or anything for us. The clicking sound is comming from the fuel pump relay*. Basically that clicking sound means its working properly, I've heard this in other GTR's as well. If you listen closely, you can hear Police-spec crown victoria's clicking in a similar way every 8-10 seconds.

"When ignition switch is 'ON', the relay operation sound must be audible. The pump must sound in 5 seconds after the relay is turned on."

Also, my mass air flow sensors acts up sometimes, so the ECU goes into safe mode or whatever... richer+retards timing. I notice that clicking sound happens quicker when my air flow sensors are being gay. So that can only mean its fuel related because since my car is running richer, more fuel is pumped into the engine, hence time interval between the clicking sounds is lessened.

**edit: actually, yes! im wrong. this clicking sound means theres an issue with the fuel pump. see pdf page 192 or manual page EN-176 for a trouble-shooting chart. i dont have the necessary tools to perform the testing

Hmm I will check it out when I get home. Mine clicks as well if only the ignition is turned on. I have noticed a strange sound a couple of times after I turned the car off. Maybe the sound of the pump slowing down? lasts for about 2-3 sec.

I think it has something to do with the voltage being sent to the relay. i suspect this because of two things, it's suggested in the service manual and after i received my car the day i got it, the battery was completely dead. the japanese battery that came with the car was brand new, but didn't hold a charge even if you jump started it and ran the car for hours because it's been sitting at a port in kobe for 4 months.

because my battery didn't hold a charge, the cars electrical pretty much ran on the alternator. this caused the cars electrical to jump from 12ish volts to something like 6volts every 8 seconds, or more frequently if i applied throttle. this frequent jump in power screwed up my cd player and speakers pretty badly. this could be a common case for cars that were imported and driven home on just the alternator alone. i have no background nor am i inclined with fixing electronics on cars, so maybe stinky_1 could give us some suggestions if hes willing enough.

I still say to build a rubber box to put the relay in and attach it to the car with a rubber grommit under the screw. You will never hear it click again!

I have this clicking too and can't figure it out. I have flushed the Attessa system and now with fresh fluid it still clicks. I am assuming that the relay is working properly since it's still working. Whats the problem here. Is it a voltage problem? Is the Hydraulic unit, that works the Attessa, not working properly?

I have this clicking too and can't figure it out. I have flushed the Attessa system and now with fresh fluid it still clicks. I am assuming that the relay is working properly since it's still working. Whats the problem here. Is it a voltage problem? Is the Hydraulic unit, that works the Attessa, not working properly?

Wasn't there a more recent post on this that said the clicking was normal?

I may be wrong though, clicking noises are always annoying.

That was related to the fuel pump. This clicking is causing the dimming of lights, and that ain't normal. I'm sure this must be hard on the electrical system.

you have to pay really close attention to notice the lights flickering though. ive only listened for this noise in about 3 or 4 other peoples GTRs and they all make this noise too.

or better yet, ask for a straight up fix - how do you make the clicking stop

i did a search awhile ago in skylinesdownunder and skylinesaustralia, with no luck. i think the last place anybody checked for advice was japan. i'm going to PM one of the sponsors from japan, hopefully they can help shed some light on this issue

any update on this issue mine has it also, everything seem to be functioning normaly, fluid bled and filled, relay swapped, same problem.

I have noticed it clicks more frequent (every 5 sec.) during a cold start, and slows down to about 15-20 second intervals after driving.

Mine also does this. all my electrical stuff flickers and i hear the click. Doesnt do it very often though; Maybe once in 5 drives. My car is at Z-tune right now so maybe I will ask them.

My electronics dont flicker and I have no drop in voltage BUT I definetly have a clicking relay in my trunk. I searched for it in the FSM awhile back a found out it is 100% normal to have a clicking realy every 5-15secs (I don't remember the exact interval). I'm pretty sure its the fuel pump. In this thread it seems everyone has this issue, I would guess its normal. Nothing to worry about, if your electronics are dimming, try a grounding kit and a new battery, it got rid of alot of my issues. Theres a member on this board making grounding kits for 45$.

i had the same clicking after i got the engine rebuilt the first time but went away after the second time... it affected my powersteering like it would cut in and out with the clicking relay i thought it was to do with Hicas or powersteering...
