Haha that comment made me laugh..but its true, you're right..its actually more like giving an injured samurai a plastic katana, the engines not that healthy either... haven't had the best experience with Chinese manifolds before, its just the idea of a single turbo is so appealing in terms of maintainability and the space it frees up..maybe I will look at getting a twin scroll T4 manifold with the future in mind, and pair it with a near term option gt35 62 mm T4 with .85 ar for response..
all while I kill these -5s

So what's the word on this thing? Is it running good? You don't come out to local meets or wings so I gotta forum chat it up haha.

Anyway I'd like to check out this car with the new mods before I leave so come out some times (check fmv).

Haha I will, reason I don't come out is because it is embarrassing right now, smogging the highway for less power than stock
its supposed to spool to full boost around 4500 rpm, but it just starts boosting then. sure smells like a big boost leak..I'll pressure test the system soon, hopefully that resolves the problem, then my embarrassment can diminish to the point of coming out to the meet lol

Don't worry about less power than stock, my wrx is much slower than the gtir.

My -5s didn't get 1 bar till 4500, no leaks and everything was new. My silver gtr was slightly quicker because The stock turbos spooled much quicker (3200rpm 14 psi) and thus had more average power (I didn't go above 14psi). The -5s obviously will be quicker with more boost. Turn it up yo

I have tried turning it up but it doesnt hit full boost till around 5500 rpm; it is very sluggish. And yesterday, I tried starting it and it wouldnt start. The last time it did that the spark plug wells were filled with oil like below, so I am expecting the same right now. Mind you it did start and run well after I cleaned all this out and tightened the rocker covers a little more.

I did a comp test then and results were worse, cylinder #3 had dropped to 100 psi without oil and cylinder 4 read 160 psi but it had a copious amount of oil go in. I'm quite fed up of this engine and the turbos; obviously there is something fixable here but my motivation is dropping with the amount of oil it drinks and the low comp numbers.

Put down an awesome 147 whp at the dyno lol. Also overwhelmed the ventilation system with the amount of oil smoke. The car is now worse for the wear with any boost resulting in large clouds of smoke and big time oil consumption. It's safe to say the turbos are DONE, for whatever reason.

I'm not reinstalling twins as theyre a PITA, I'm going single for the accessibility and simplicity the setup offers. Got a few parts already; here are some teasers..PS not using the existing engine either..

Sucks to hear... must have been turbos that were using the wrong oil restrictor? (used?)

As for turbo, what is that? precision?

                    • I have my engine (fully built) up for sale and a vipec V44 if you want a badass ecu. We're planning for another baby and since I'm happy with the wrx, I need to clean out the parts car.

The engine isn't back from the machinist yet it will be freshly rebuilt. I have specs in my forsale thread.

Missing out on local meets mang! Chis (evo 3) even comes in his focus titanium which is better equipped that the ZL1's that come by haha.

                      • Thanks guys!

I'm still not sure what went wrong, all the oil drains are run with no big kinks, and as for the feed, I am running 0.8 mm restrictors and I know they were run on restrictors before since the previous owner sent the hard oil lines and those have the restrictor built in. It is possible some debris got into the CHRA, now I know better to blow out the CHRA and housings with compressed air or something.

Haha I will show up to the meets eventually, in one car or another!

As for the new turbo, It will be a Precision 6262. I know, this wont yield ultimate spool (probably full boost in the range of 4-4.5k, but it will provide the 500whp I seek without much drama. I was stuck on whether to go twin scroll or not, but there just isnt enough proof of it working wonders on spool time. It does prove to be more effective in terms of transient response and power under the curve.

For me, the disadvantages outweigh the gains as a TRUE twin scroll setup requires individual wastegates for each set of runners, and this will add clutter to the crowded exhaust side of the GTR bay, which is precisely what I was seeking to avoid by going single. I suppose there is the divided internal WG option of the EFR as well.

The manifold is Lovefab. It is 304 SS construction and it is very nice quality. It is flanged for a Tial 60mm wastegate.

                          • Still waiting for the new engine. Meanwhile, parts are trickling in. I decided to go with twin scroll after all; it was either that or running a quick spool valve, with the latter just seeming to complicate things some more. Regardless, the 6boost sure made it an easy choice.

The manifold is a thing of beauty, I have the divided T4 with dual flanges for the Tial 38mm MV-S wastegates. All welds look good. the internal and external ceramic coating is supposedly good to 1000 C from what I can find. They've coated the flanges which I hope does not cause issues at the sealing surface. Anyway, it appears to be one quality product. I just have to check the flange flatness but looks ok.

And here is the Precision 6262, with the Ported S compressor cover (4.0" inlet/2.5" outlet), T4 Divided .84 A/R with 3 5/8" V-Band discharge, and journal bearings.

And here are some additions that will be made to the engine once it arrives:

                            Tomei Poncams B
                            Tomei Oil Pan Baffle

                            • eek! turbo lag! Looks like it's gonna be a fun turbo though haha nice manifold and turbo for sure, not a bad way to spend $4000! Is the new engine built or the same stock restrictor?

How come you didn't go with better sized pro cams?

Curious as to what that manifold weighs...?

Let me know if you need a tranny ever, my house in McMurray is for sale and the tranny takes up too much space to move down here (R33 gtr)
